Isn't that inevitable once people consider themselves 'Chosen'?

It's not unique to Judaism of course. The Koran explicitly declares 'Ye are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind.' (Sura 3:110) and reinforces it by declaring, 'Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.' (Sura 98:6).

In short, join the cult and you get extra value: reject it and you're devoid of any. Of course, because they've existed for millennia, we dignify them by calling them 'religions', though frankly, I think Ambrose Bierce's definition of magic suits them better:

'An art of converting superstition into coin.'

Its fascinating how powerful #animism was at protecting the environment for most of existence. I just learned recently that the #nymphs in #Greek #mythology really no different than local #Shinto deities, or animal spirits of the Americas. Every rock, stream and tree had a spirit attached to it, and if one wanted to change or use the land, they had to know how to appeal to these spirits and do it sparingly.
Even #polytheists had some variety of lesser animistic spirits that get lost among the big names. Of course, major roman brownies got upgraded to gods when they saw and liked the Greek #pantheon.
To this day even if they don't actually believe in it, Icelanders use the concepts of land #elves as kind of an extra layer of bureaucracy before changing the land. Animists have been looked down on, as the most primitive form of religion. As modern science shows us that the environment is one of the most important things to protect, perhaps it is the most important and advanced form of #religion .
Wanton destruction of the planet only happened when we switched to #monotheism and converted all those spirits into evil #demons in our minds. It opened up many new scientific and technological advances but wrecked the planet. Perhaps we need some form of applied animistic bureaucracy such as giving all things a certain level of rights and autonomy to ensure they survive for future generations to also enjoy. #environmentalism

...I did quite a bit of reading on #Echnaton myself and immediately had the same base idea: he invented #monotheism.)

Finally, #DerSpiegel is one of #GERMANY's trend-setting media (#Leitmedien.)

As I said, most mainstream media shared the same assessment of #GretaThunberg at the time.
So, no, it is not fostering right-wing extremism.
However, it definitely is not one of its best covers and the subtitle is too ballyhooed/Yellow Press style.

Which practices have contributed the most to your personal spiritual growth?

For me, it's the following:

- Setting aside time each day for prayer, the reading of sacred texts, and contemplation

- Sticking to a consistent meditation schedule

- Researching the works of theologians, mystics, and skeptics alike

- Keeping a journal of all of my spiritual questions, concerns, wishes, and experiences

- Letting signs and synchronicities inspire me, but letting discernment guide my actions.

- Embracing the ecstatic and confounding nature of the Mysteries with wonder and love

The author explores the reasons for the argument that polytheisms can talk to one another freely while monotheisms find it virtually impossible to have meaningful interreligious dialogues. Maurizio Bettini provides examples illustrating this view. This is a book that not only scholars but also the general public would find manageable. worldhistory.org/review/278/in #RomanEmpire #Religion #Monotheism #History

Range of possible religious #beliefs

There's a huge range of beliefs: #polytheism, #monotheism, #atheism, and more. I was looking for a graph that would show them all in relation to each other. Since I didn’t find one yet, I put this together. Any thoughts? We're discussing this, from a Jewish point of view, over on Coffeehouse Torah Talk, our Facebook havurah (study-fellowship.)

I'm getting really tired of the bogus argument _“if we dispense with #religion, worse forms of dogmatism arise to fill the void”_.

No.

First, a technicality: some of the secular forms of fanaticism that _did_ replace #Christianity in History _were themselves religions_. #ChristopherHitchens, #SamHarris and others have in insisted in the religious nature of #Nazism (and my reading of #MeinKampf is confirming that); #Communism from #Mao to #PolPot showed all the signs of a faith-based ideology; #JohnMcWhorter [has mapped all the tenets of a religion onto wokeism](nytimes.com/2021/10/26/books/r); etc. So in a sense, #JordanPeterson and others are right when they say that often religion gets replaced with worse stuff… but then they should explain what “worse stuff” they fear could replace the religion that we call, eg, #wokeism!

And even then, this argument is tossed around with no supporting evidence: where's the careful study of enough historical situations to prove that _always_ (or even _often_) when some form of #monotheism lost ground quickly, nihilistic or destructive atheism took its place?

If one removes broken tiles from the floor, of course there's the risk that those holes will get filled with mud or dirt. But it does not _have_ to be that way. One is also free to decide to level the floor with new tiles or with other material — or even to board up that entire corner of the house, and never step on it again.
