FOSS NEWS
Mozilla launches Thundermail, a Gmail alternative email service with @thundermail email addresses, and Thunderbird Pro, which includes appointment scheduler, file sharing tools, and AI-powered features (Thunderbird Assist):
https://alternativeto.net/news/2025/4/mozilla-launches-thundermail-its-open-source-gmail-alternative-and-thunderbird-pro-services/
(POV it will be killed off after a short time like other Mozilla products lol. There's already Proton Mail, a privacy-focused mail service from a company with a better track record, more than 100 million users, also Tuta for those who don't mind it not being fully FOSS, so I don't really think Thundermail has a shot here, but nice try regardless, at least they try to have some source of income other than Google.)
Firefox 137 released with HEVC playback support on Linux, ability to identify all links in PDF files and turn them into hyperlinks, new options in the Browser Layout section under General settings (vertical tabs, show sidebar); some progressively rolled out features: sign PDF documents, calculator feature for address bar (now you don't have to open the Console tab of dev tools for that lol), tab grouping:

Firefox 138 beta available new contrast control (same colors for all websites) setting, support for copying links for background tabs using the tabstrip context menu on Linux and macOS, more tab grouping features, new “Report broken site” feature, etc.:
Midori browser gets new ad blocker (Astian Privacy, also available for other Firefox-based browsers), VPN service (utilizing WireGuard, with OpenVPN support planned), search engine AstianGO now has its own indexing:

How will #Mozilla fuck up Thundermail?
How important should being open source be to me? Or, more precisely, should the obnoxiousness of #mozilla management outweigh the closed source nature of vivaldi.
I've been trying #vivaldi as a replacement for #firefox, my default browser. I could easily switch to vivaldi.
BUT vivaldi is not open source.
I've read the explanation for why parts of vivaldi are not open source was not convinced.
Hard to "weigh" incommensurable concerns.
I did completely get rid of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird on my personal systems now.
Firefox :firefox: was my main browser for many years and I used it since Netscape transformed into OSS Firefox 20 years ago.
But the Mozilla foundation nowadays doesn't do a good job in maintaining the software. Bad political choices, focus on what I consider the wrong priorities and falling more and more behind on the techical details.
I moved to the Chromium based Vivaldi browser on all my systems. It's snappier, faster and way more reliable. Hardware acceleration does work out of the box under Linux and E-Mail is already built-in (although, I more often use KMail by KDE for that).
I'm highly satisfied with Vivaldi after using it for the past 6 months and never looked back.

@bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen @fuchsiii that's a general problem with #Mozilla.
They completely loose #focus and I think they should hand over #Firefox to @torproject and turn #TorBrowser into the Upstream...
@bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen That's exactly the problem, cuz #KaiOS nee #FirefoxOS was a good and solid basis not just for #LowEnd-Devices but could've been excellent for a more #secure mobile OS, as it has good potential for #sandboxing and #KISS-principle'd #Apps that are lean and efficient.
But then again when enthusiasts like @fuchsiii and I were shouting "#ShutUpAndTakeMyMoney!" to #Mozilla, they basically refused to sell any #device, and then we get the "#PSvita-Effect":
Noone's gonna build an #App for a platform that is essentially a rounding error from the start!…

www.youtube.com@punkfairie @ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen @fuchsiii Yeah and #Symbian is used with cheap phones of a brand named #Swisstone.
Case in point: #KaiOS nee #FirefoxOS is now drowned in obscurity because of #Mozilla mismanagment and hamfisted approach compared to #Android.

Thunderbird is getting a bunch of new features
TechRadar proexcept for the AI shit that I don't know why Mozilla-affiliated services are pushing through, from the Thunderbird perspective I'd say this announcement is the most coherent and hopeful that has been produced for several years related to Mozilla products https://thunderbird.topicbox.com/groups/planning/T437cd854afcb1395/thundermail-and-thunderbird-pro-services
however if it means they'll essentially lock out people from using Thunderbird with their emails from other services, it's completely unnecessary and shortsighted

GitHubIf "AI in the browser" was of any true value to users, it would be shipped as an extension. Maybe a paid extension.
Then the market could decide its value.
Forcing it into the browser without consent is an admission that it does not provide users with value and could not survive without a heavy thumb on the scales.
@ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen @fuchsiii Maybe had #Mozilla actually cared they could've convinced #Nokia to do #FirefoxOS and we'd not have the shitty #Duopoly of today, but as we all know the decisions were made by #TechIlliterate suits that are just #HornyForMoney"…
@ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen yes, and to add insult to injury #Mozilla didn't even wanted to sell people like @fuchsiii or me a #FirefoxOS device, with the only one being "launched" in the #EU being a #SimLock'd & #NetLock'd #prepaid phone in #Spain one could only attain in-store with all the "#KYC" nonsense they had, demanding a legal address in Spain back then.
So whilst Firefox OS had the most "#accessible" #Development #tools (literally using #Firefox for it and having every #App as #WebView|s / #HTML5+#JS5+#CSS3 files in a container), they didn't even sold us said devices, making it a worse flop than #UbuntuTouch which at least still gets some devices made that support it...
And #nerds like myself are far from the "#consoomer #Normies" for whom stuff that isn't on shelves at Staturn/MediaMarkt, BestBuy, Walmart, ... doesn't exist. I'm used to importing #tech that I want!
Feels even more half-assed than #MobileCoin in hindsight…
