Weird question about Microsoft Excel

So I have been wanting to learn more about how to use Microsoft Excel so I can teach other people about some of the more advanced programming techniques (EDIT: 1-on-1 lessons on their own computer with their own licensed copies of Excel). I want to teach myself more about Excel so I was going to install it on my own computer and do some advanced tutorials. But then I really do not want to burn up all of that disk space just to run Wine and Excel.

So I got to thinking:

is there an older version of Microsoft Excel I could use instead?
The “ribbon” UI/UX asside, how far back in time (in Excel software versions) would I have to go before the formula language and cell computation engine became too different from the most recent Excel that it would not be very useful for me as a learning/teaching tool?
Would it take less disk space to run this in a minimal Windows NT 2000 or Windows XP instance on QEMU than it would take on Wine?

#libreoffice calc, die open source Alternative zu #msexcel hat jetzt die Funktion #xverweis bzw #XLOOKUP . Damit ist für mich wieder ein wichtiger Meilenstein Geschäft. Danke, Entwicklerteam!

Dear @microsoft #MSExcel developers: has none of you printed a spreadsheet with #MSWindows set to its built-in #accessibility visual theme, high-contrast black? Because the latest version of #Microsoft365 apps for enterprise prints out black pages with light text. And when I switch the visual theme to the built-in high-contrast white, it prints white pages with black text. Same spreadsheet. That shouldn't happen. #usability

Stay on the keyboard ⌨️ don’t touch that mouse! 🚫🖱️ Tip: you can edit the contents of a cell in #MSExcel by pressing F2, to exit press F2 again. Dead simple, job done, happy days 👍 Seriously a lot more streamlined than moving back and forth to the mouse and double-clicking each time you want to edit the cell contents.

Is #MSExcel really this pain in the neck, or is it just me? 😒

@miriamjones well, #kanban has been around for decades. At least as a method for industrial production control. But even for #office and #admin stuff, kanban has been around for ~15 years. A good book to get started is Mike Burrows's "Kanban from the inside". You can use any kind of software you like, e.g. #Trello or even #libreoffice #calc (#msexcel).

Hi, I’m James and this is my #introduction.

I'm originally from a rural town in middle Missouri but now call #SaintLouis my home. I have a love for the American southwest (my Mom is from New Mexico) and for the coastal city of #Savannah #Georgia.

I'm single, live alone with two #dachshunds (#dogs) named Amelia and Penelope. I'm a #progressive #liberal, can't stand money in #politics, and yearn for a day when the #Democrats improve their messaging and start fighting back.

What I'm into: #Photography, #Cooking, #Grilling, #StarWars, #StarTrek, #80sMovies, #JurassicPark, #Marvel, #dinosaurs, #computers, #gadgets, #VBA, #Python, #MSExcel, #art, #archaeology, #history, #3DPrinting, #philosophy, #news, and you'll find I'm a bit of an all-around nerd.

I’m also #diabetic, suffer from #anxiety, #depression, and #panicattacks. Forgive me in advance if I reach out.

I'm sarcastic as all get out but I have a big heart, that's easily broken when I see people (or animals) hurting.

In today's episode of #MSEXCEL oddities: if you drag a date down across rows, it increments the DAY. From 10/28 to 10/31, for instance. If you were expecting an increment of the minute or second, you're out of luck. Especially if you were looking for that and thus didn't catch the day update.

#TodayILearned: editing a spreadsheet template with the #Qlik #NPrinting #NPrintingDesigner expects that #MSExcel is the default spreadsheet editor on the PC. Any other default editor will cause the designer to fail opening the template. And thanks, Qlik. #TIL #Usability

One thing #MSEXCEL can do easily: repeatedly add minute intervals to a start time. Great for scheduling. How do you do that in #LibreOffice #Calc, or #haskell? I've read that LibreOffice Text has a programming function for it... but that does not seem available in Calc. Did I miss it? And I've looked around in haskell base modules... How does one create a custom start time?

I'd done a couple of pivot tables following tutorials previously but never thought I'd have a good use case to apply them (tutorials are always around sales and money, not really what I do for work).

However, after selecting circuit types and router models for a 200-site WAN RFP, a pivot table to count the number of router models, circuits and bandwidths comes extremely useful.

#MsExcel is a must-have tool.

Sometimes I get the feeling that people want us to use #MSExcel #spreadsheets for tasks that should use better tools because they don't know how to use those better tools.

"Your browser does not support video. Install Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash Player, or Internet Explorer 9," says #Microsoft's support page on #VLOOKUP for #MSExcel.

Because their web programmer did NOT put in an #html5 video object.

Instead, they put in a DIV, then tried to turn that into video using #javascript.

No, Microsoft, I'm not going to do any of that. Fix your web page #accessibility and use standard HTML5 elements.

If you don't even care about your video, why should I?

#Nprinting 11 with #QlikView 12 and #MSEXCEL crashes so often during template development that it's best to save every step and close the entire NPrinting document, prior to requesting a preview. Crashes cause recent changes to get undone. It's a highly frustrating, low-productivity experience.
