U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a number of incorrect statements about autistic people recently, one of which was that "they'll never write a poem."
Bradley J. Irish, an autistic professor of English, writes for @TheConversationUS about the remarkable corpus of poetry written by autistic people, from modern poets like David Miedzianik and Adam Wolfond, to people from the past who may have been neurodivergent or autistic. Neurodivergent poet and educator Chris Martin describes working with autistic students: “Time and again, I have watched my students … grasp the hand of poetry and begin dancing like they’ve been doing it their whole lives.”

Dear light-sensitive people, can you please share experiences with or recommendations for FL-41 glasses?
I am looking for something that will help me navigate the harsh lights at my work place. I do have a rather small skull, so I often have to look long and hard for sunnies that don't slide off my nose. Hence, I'm looking for FL-41 glasses that have a relatively small fit. Do you have any recommendations?
Do you have any other advice that you can share? Thanks!

@SailorDisco What a profoundly relatable place to be. Scary…but also so beautiful.
I love how you’ve relayed that perspective shift. Of finding out what you CAN do.
In this world, I so much of our #neurodivergence gets defined by what we CAN’T do. (Mainly due to living in a neurotypical society).
In reality, our beautiful brains can do so many unique things, without which this world would be duller.
The world needs more #ActuallyAutistic people finding and living out what we can do.
I understand people might need formal diagnosis for a number of reasons. I do want to share this however as a note of warning, that a record of neurodivergence can be weaponized by governments.

The GuardianNo RFK Jr. There's no autism epidemic in the US or anywhere. There is just more diagnosis, acceptance & understanding, & this is way it should be. It's dangerous to dehumanise neurodivergence, rather than accept that brains are often wired differently.

The ConversationI think... One of the things that shifted my personal thinking from being broken but managing, to feeling like a valid person in my own right was my ADHD diagnosis. Its like the Percy Jackson books haha, I'm not built for being bored, I'm built for being scared shitless and being able to function anyways.
Some things I find questionable that I've seen floating around neurodivergent space:
That Adderall, stimulants are a litmus test for ADHD in the sense that it has a calming effect only on those with ADHD while it has the opposite effect on those without ADHD. I'll grant that this may be true for some folks, including those with ADHD, but I'm not certain it has a calming effect /only/ on ADHD folks. If there are studies with replicated results that demonstrate this, that will remove a lot of my doubt. One study isn't going to convince me, nor should it convince anyone else.
I'm not exactly doubting the validity of this, but I'd like to learn more about the differences between ADHD and autism. I feel like a lot of people conflate these unintentionally, or maybe what they are describing is one and the same underlying condition with their specific unique presentation. I've seen well-respected autism advocates say that the central defining feature of autism is monotropism, whereas ADHD people are polytropic. So I'm curious how one can be monotropic yet also be ADHD. There was a Venn diagram someone made that showed traits where autism and ADHD differ and where they overlap. I found this Venn diagram to coincide with my experience and mental model, and it made me think that autism and ADHD are just different presentations/phenotypes of one and the same thing.

GitLab7 days.
I lasted 7 days this time.
It wasn’t personal, or course. It was just everything about the way I communicate and who I am.
Just not a fit.
I really thought it was going well this time.
Remember, #AutismAcceptance means accepting people even if you don’t know they’re autistic. Working with them, not cutting them loose. Human beings take time.
Yeah...this is me.
I know few things about a lot of things, but a lot about a few things.
