put your pronouns in your bio.
write an #indroduction #introductions and copy in those hashtags
hashtags are good for discovery but don't spam them
content warnings on things that are distressing to people and they can't do anything about are always a good idea: eg, ukpol, uspol, war
use "lewd" not "NSFW" on your lewd toots
my instance's admin prefers the content warning anti-trans hate to transphobia as that's a better description, I agree and think it's a good rule in general.
use image descriptions, any make them actually descriptive.
don't go by mastodon's advice on who to follow, you can find the dozen funniest people on the plant (for you) right now if you just look yourself.

New users: post an #Introduction, littered with hashtags that are related to your interests so others with similar interests can find easily!
Fediverse hasn't widely adopted full text search, so hashtags are the easiest way to find new people to follow.
Also, remember that this isn't *only* Mastodon. This is the Fediverse with MANY different softwares here with many different features.
If you refer to everything as Mastodon, we'll just end up like Twitter where one asshole is in charge.

I'd say it's more important to be genuine and keep your toots brief and punchy.

One important reminder, especially for all the #NewUsers coming from the #twittermigration -
PLEASE remember to BOOST posts that you like! Hitting the favourite button is a nice quiet way to show an artist that you like something, but that's literally all it does. On #Twitter, faves get promoted by an algorithm; a fave is basically a "soft retweet."
On #Mastodon, that isn't the case. A favourite does literally nothing except give the artist a notification "[user] favourited your post." That's it. For interests you want to keep private or that aren't appropriate for the "brand" you're building on your account, that's fair! But otherwise, please BOOST instead of just favouriting!

mastodon has an unfair reputation for difficulty, and its different than twitter, but once you get used to it you will find its much more pleasant. twitter was designed around randos and enabling harassment. mastodon is not - although it still exists, people being who they are, the system doesn't make it as easy as twitter does.
