I wanted to add some lighting effects to Deer Portal. It felt natural that after board setup animation diamonds should light up ;)

Big Mac, Little Content: Liquid Glass Serves Up Extra Bezels with No Fries

But there’s one nagging feeling I have about reinterpreting beloved things, which is that before anyone attempts to do it, they must first seek to understand why it is beloved. It is only through understanding it that anyone can do the job well.

Rose-Gold-Tinted Liquid Glasses

It’d be nice if they were knocked off their pedestal, because I think they’re better when they’re trying to outdo someone else rather than themselves.

Louie Mantia is a brilliant icon (and visual) designer and I don’t agree with everything Louie writes about. However, I do pay attention to what he says. Unlike people like Louie, I am a fan of iOS 7 design. I think iOS democratized design to software production in a way that made it far more approachable even if that was never the intent.

One didn’t have to develop rich leather textures just to design something. I think history would suggest that iOS 7 design had a long, illustrious achievement. However, during that time, I am with Louie that Mac seems to have lost some of its personality. Mac wasn’t the place where skeuomorphism was super live. As a result, it always felt like the melange that Apple really needed. Some apps were skeuomorphic, others preferred flatter design, the web itself and the web platform also supported its own set of designs etc.

All to say – I relate to Louie’s ennui here. My entire reaction to Liquid Glass ranges from ‘meh’ to sad acceptance that the Mac will likely change for the worse. The biggest problem I have is that overall content area seems to be lowering again and that likely means bigger devices.

I am slowly reaching the point where the devices I own feel too big. I’d love for more content window size for a smaller device.

Personally, I felt that John Gruber had the actual reason why we have Liquid Glass

As for why, it should be enough to justify Liquid Glass simply for the sake of looking cool. I opened this piece with a quote from a great fictional philosopher. I’ll close it with a quote from a great real one:

So, I am likely coming to Louie’s PoV. Maybe when we lost visual richness, not richness in texture, but richness in clarifying the various fields to the point that it almost felt intuitive

When we lost visual richness in software, we lost a requirement to think about design with regards to how it looks.

Visual Richness

I highly recommend reading the whole essay. It accepts that iOS 7 allowed for more apps, but it also encouraged less designed apps. And that thoughtfulness was part of what made the Apple apps and visual design special.

In the real world, we have so many indicators: color, shape, material, lighting, form, texture, weight.

So, while Liquid glass does bring a version of material and lighting (and hence shadows, reflection and refraction), they feel like form without function. My reaction is stemming from what I’ve observed so far based on what Apple thinks the best of Liquid Glass is going to be from the keynote and WWDC presentations.

However, if the past few beta cycles have a theme, and the past few months have a theme, it’s that Apple is also (anachronistically) conceding to user feedback. So, consider mine just another voice that can be added to make a movement. This is not against Liquid Glass, I think it’s “cool.” I just don’t understand its visual purpose. I believe that I am open minded to be able to listen to them explain why.

I got a MacBook Air from 2012 to clean install that's planned for use for a 20 year lad.
I doubt he will be able to use it properly. Mountain Lion can't even open websites anymore due to SSL. Now trying Big Sur. #Apple #OSX

Every time some profoundly doof website makes the decision that "copying our content is bad" and mangle with the text selection feature, I'm forced to make a screenshot and extract the text somehow. For most cases #OSX #PreviewApp works well. For everything else...

I'd never been interested in the market share of #OS vendors across all platforms.

But it's a very interesting statistic:
- #Google is close to 48% with #Android
- #Microsoft at 24.5% with #Windows
- #Apple at 22% with #iOS + #OSX + #macOS
- #Linux at 1.5%

Not at all surprised to see Google 1st in terms of the quantity of Android smartphones sold, but still, double that of Microsoft!

Another surprise: Apple is hot on its heels! Mainly thanks to iOS.

Which shows how the failure of Windows Phone/Mobile has truly changed the game in home computing.

This is probably Steve Jobs' most direct contribution to OS X – wallpapers in OS X Leopard (10.5) created from pictures he took in Japan. Last year, I was standing in the same location as he was when he took the rock garden picture (Ryoanji temple in Kyoto) more than two decades ago. Fascinating.

These are two of the rock garden pictures I shot there last year.

Most comments which I received and some reviews which I was reading were clear that nobody had a clue what is happening during the game in the context of the cards. I added a simple overlay text, will replace later with some proper graphic for UI, but for now it explains actions after taking the cards.

Going back and forth from #Gnome to #OSX is a trip. There was a time when OSX was the clean, intuitive, and highly functional desktop, but since Steve Jobs died, Apple's UX has gotten more and more cluttered. Jobs was a piece of shit (and that does NOT justify the next thing I'm going to say), but he did keep the UX *clean*. Gnome feels like was OSX could have evolved into. Although I does take about a dozen extensions to achieve that. :)

Figured it out!
I'm using OSX, and the OS did not actually trust the Charles CA cert until I manually added trust through Keychain Access.

Not the first time #OSX has tripped me up, won't be the last, but on we go.

Got a few more tests to run.

This report about #Wacom graphics tablets is disturbing for a couple of reasons.

1. They are surveilling users of their #tablet - a human-interface device analogous to a mouse or trackball - recording every application you open, or when you switch between windows of different applications. They are collecting this data via a trip through Google Analytics, aka Spyware Central. There is no possible way to justify collection of this particular data; it is none of their damn business how long you have your drawing program focused before switching to your browser and back again. The author notes their privacy policy really doesn't describe this collection of data correctly, so there really can't be informed consent in the first place.

2. Why on earth is it possible in #Apple #OSX / #MacOS for a USB human interface device driver to capture this information in the first place? Apple shares a big slice of the blame here - this should just simply not be possible for the driver to collect in the first place. Having such a driver allowed to place outgoing HTTP requests is also a big "WTF are they thinking?" moment.
