This cover highlights the article The disulfide catalyst QSOX1 maintains the colon mucosal barrier by regulating Golgi glycosyltransferases by Tal Ilani, Deborah Fass and colleagues. The mucus layer that coats and protects the interior surface of the colon is a hydrogel of heavily glycosylated polymeric proteins, seen as stringy fibrils by scanning electron microscopy.Under the surface, the production of mucus by colon goblet cells is seen, with cell nuclei in blue and mucus granules in green. QSOX1, a catalyst of disulfide bond formation, performs a critical function in the production of a stable and functional mucus layer: activating enzymes that add sialic acid to mucosal proteins.
