as #MilkAndMore are still offering #compost with #peat, I checked up and found that the ban scheduled for the end of 2024 hasn't happened. And who knows if it will ever be implemented. If you want to speed up the #ClimateCatastrophe, carry on destroying the #peatlands, that's probably a bigger factor than things like cars or airtravel.

scitechchron.blogspot.comGood Idea: Use peat free potting soil
https://rosysoil.com/blogs/news/peat-free-potting-soil
As planting season begins, choosing peat-free soil is a simple way to help the environment. Peatlands, which store vast amounts of carbon and support unique wildlife, are harmed when peat is harvested, releasing carbon and destroying habitats. By opting for peat-free, you're supporting sustainable gardening, protecting carbon stores, and preserving biodiversity—all while growing healthy plants.
"Peatlands occupy just 3% of all land, but contain more carbon than all of the world’s forests. However, farmers and miners are draining the peatlands, releasing so much CO2 that if they were a country, they would be the fourth biggest polluter in the world."

“Peatland degradation is second only to tropical deforestation as a source of greenhouse gas emissions from land use, yet peatlands are often overlooked in conservation and climate policy.”

beda.mediaA long walk today around the Roman Wall Loughs looking at some of the rewetting work which has been taking place recently on the peat lands. Why #peat is a key ingredient in whisky and the climate crisis
Oh nooooo! I've happily given up flying and animal products for the climate but it never occurred to me that the reason whisky flavours are described as peaty is the production involves burning actual peat
https://theconversation.com/why-peat-is-a-key-ingredient-in-whisky-and-the-climate-crisis-245497
This is a key reason why I switched to non-peated Irish whiskey.
@TheConversationUK not all #Whisky does use #peat and #peating - only few #smoky ones do...
#Germany: Forests don't provide net carbon #sequestration & drained #peatlands continue to emit #CO2 heavily. In dry years, the water levels of these #soils are lower, i.e. more #peat is decomposed by microorganisms = higher CO2 #emissions... I may be showing some ignorance here, but I'd be reluctant to spread any rock dust on the #soil here, particularly basalt as it's not locally occurring.
The #soil here is several feet of #peat over sand. The #dyke, you see to the right of compost cages in the photos, is the boundary of the #Broads #NationalPark, and a "Site of Special Scientific Interest".
The #Broads (the local #lakes) that give the area its name are famous as flooded medieval peat diggings.
@Pollinators
I feel a little guilty that, so far, I've only used the #compost to top up some #raised_beds, which have largely been abandoned because the #Muntjac #deer raid just about everything planted in them, and to raise the paths around the site. Most of this part of the site is pure #peat and the slightest footfall wears them away to the point where #tree #roots become a hazard. I mix the compost with any #chippings I generate from fallen #timber.

What happens to the world if #forests stop absorbing #carbon? Ask #Finland
#NaturalSinks of forests and #peat were key to Finland’s ambitious target to be #CarbonNeutral by 2035. But now, the land has started emitting more #GreenhouseGases than it stores
"The number of dying trees also increased in recent years as forests are stressed by #drought and high temperatures. In south-east Finland, the number of dying trees has risen rapidly, increasing 788% in just six years between 2017 and 2023, and the amount of standing deadwood – decaying trees – is up by about 900%."
by Patrick Greenfield, Inari, Finland
"Tiina Sanila-Aikio cannot remember a summer this warm. The months of midnight sun around #Inari, in Finnish Lapland, have been hot and dry. Conifer needles on the branch-tips are orange when they should be a deep green. The moss on the forest floor, usually swollen with water, has withered.
"'I have spoken with many old #ReindeerHerders who have never experienced the heat that we’ve had this summer. The sun keeps shining and it never rains,' says Sanila-Aikio, former president of the #FinnishSami parliament.
"The #BorealForests here in the #Sami homeland take so long to grow that even small, stunted trees are often hundreds of years old. It is part of the #Taiga – meaning “land of the little sticks” in Russian – that stretches around the far northern hemisphere through #Siberia, #Scandinavia, #Alaska and #Canada.
"It is these forests that helped underpin the credibility of the most ambitious carbon-neutrality target in the developed world: Finland’s commitment to be #CarbonNeutral by 2035.
"The law, which came into force two years ago, means the country is aiming to reach the target 15 years earlier than many of its EU counterparts.
"In a country of 5.6 million people with nearly 70% covered by forests and peatlands, many assumed the plan would not be a problem.
"For decades, the country’s forests and peatlands had reliably removed more carbon from the atmosphere than they released. But from about 2010, the amount the land absorbed started to decline, slowly at first, then rapidly. By 2018, Finland’s land sink – the phrase scientists use to describe something that absorbs more carbon than it releases – had vanished."

The GuardianAs a result from the discussion of today's #peat protest at the Finnish parliament, and the public discussion it sparked, I started wonder how to measure which types of protests are effective.
Maybe by following the money?
If an activist group does X, how is that reflected in the donation flows to relevant charities, etc. To make it more complex, we should also get data on money going in the opposite direction to map the counter-reactions.
Two climate groups said they wanted to draw attention…
