@scops I think a good argument could be made that for most computing needs 16-bit is all that has ever been needed, probably with a 32-bit address space, and possibly using 16-bit word memories rather than 8-bit (bytes). Pretty much most personal and industrial requirements can be met with a 16-bit computer, only big iron scientific, advanced engineering, and possibly large business, requirements require higher bit computing.
Possibly the reason a lot of focus has been on 8-bit #permacomputing is that it is more manageable, only 256 values to deal with. For instance making a bespoke character set for 8-bit, only requires a maximum of 256 characters, well within most individuals hobby timescales. Whereas a 16-bit (original unicode) character set requires 65,536 characters, a rather large task. This is reflected throughout a 16-bit computer, like making an OS, it generally just requires a lot more effort, which is better met by a team rather than an individual, but I think that is largely due to the fact that it is just a more capable computer.
#thought about #permacomputing - why is there a focus on something like 8bit computers when the #amiga was for example a human understandable computer (https://www.retro-commodore.eu/2024/04/22/amiga-hardware-reference-manual-2/) ? wouldn't it be better to focus on something like a (fpga or custom build) amiga with aros as operating system (or a simpler amiga dos like os) instead of a basic 8bit like system?
Everything you need to code for the Commodore Amiga

Early notice: Next #permacomputing meetup in vienna will be on October 14th. Everything else still to be determined, and will be announced in good time. :)

Once again having #PermaComputing thoughts and also feeling the frustration of just how much friction and sacrifice it would involve. I’m still hoping that if I think about it hard enough, I’ll find the right way in, and the right balance
Long, cool idea, solarpunk
Ok so I had an *idea* for a project that's just completely outside of my wheelhouse/understanding/capability, so I figured I'd post it.
Concept: A technical novel about a #solarpunk nomad that finds an old laptop. The story details (in great depth) their efforts to revive the device and turn it into a useful tool.
I have seen a lot of really cool #permacomputing and solarpunk stuff lately (especially #uxn) but as someone without a tonne of hardware exp its baffling to me how someone would go from zero to uxn on a device in a post-computing future. Everything seems like you'd need an existing fully functional computer for bootstrapping!
What'a the minimum needed? What's the baseline of portable tools and knowledge our nomad needs to transform scrap into a functioning computing device?
The easy answer is to carry around a Debian boot usb, but I want to imagine this like 2000 years in the future where all we have is permacomputing roms and some wires. Maybe a couple ancient arduinos and a keyboard with a lil screen?
(I feel like @nina_kali_nina would know the answers to most of these questions and is already living in the solarpunk future)
#PSA Please when designing new tech consider that not everyone has a reliable 24/7 broadband internet connection, or a large screen, or a keyboard, or a mouse, or is able to get a domain name, or is able to run services from home, is able to power their home-server for the whole day, or can rent a VPS, or can have their ip-addresses be linked to an identity, or has one legal identity, or has one name, or has a recent computer, or has easy access to a debit or credit card, or has a bank account with either, or has a PayPal account, or has bitcoin, or one of many other things some and often many people just don't have, etc…

Campact BlogVienna's third http://permacomputing.net meeting is happening TODAY:
* Tuesday, July 15th 19:00-22:00
* We meet outside in the south-east corner of Auer-Welsbach-Park (U4 Schönbrunn, https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/219906996#map=17/48.187656/16.319772)
* Look for a handful of people with a picnic blanket and a battery-powered Casio Keyboard from the 90ies
* "Battery-powered Casio Keyboard from the 90ies??" ... Yes! Because our topic will be batteries: Building open source batteries, batteries and the energy transition, lithium mining, ethical ramifications, and so on.
* Anyone interested in the topic(s) of permacomputing is very welcome, whether you're just curious or already a seasoned permacomputer, we're glad to have you!

Artist and Designer Chaline Bang ( @chalinebang ) will talk about her personal adventures and collective experiments in permacomputing. She is a member of the Rotterdam-based research group _permacomputing evenings_ and will share how they learned to build servers out of obsolete smartphones using postmarketOS. The group conducted experiments into practical techniques and aesthetic approaches as well as organizing public events with outside researchers.

setspace.ukI finally have setup a new #permacomputing environment, a #raspberrypi 3B+. Right now I'm just running raspbian on it. Maybe I'll try another OS on this. #netbsd would be cool
