That coating wasn't so obvious on those rocks before, at least to unaware observers. But in hind sight, it was all there in the open for anyone to see:

The recently abraded rock had substantial coating underneath the dust, but the gas Dust Removal Tool (gDRT) blew the dust away and now it is fully visible. The image was captured in the shadow of #Perseverance's turret.

Meanwhile on Mars!

Perseverance rover images its latest abrasion patch. For scale the patch has a diameter of about 5 cm (2") This image from its SHERLOC WATSON camera was acquired on June 5, 2025 (Sol 1526) at the local mean solar time of 12:26. Credits: NASA.JPL-Caltech.

Perseverance rover using one of its abrasion bits in its rotary percussive drill, to remove the surface of a patch of rock during sol 1525 (June 4, 2025) for further investigation. The diameter of the bit is ~5 cm (2 inches).

@sharponlooker
We've seen that paper before, haven't we?

Jezero Mons being a volcano also nicely explains the #crackedRocks that look like lava bombs: they may actually BE #lavaBombs.

On Sol-1519 (May 29, 2025), Perseverance captured with its Navcam's a large dust devil off in the distance with the rovers wheel tracks extending in the direction of it. This is quite a scene actually and it is highly reminiscent of a similar view by the Opportunity rover when it photographed one using its Navcam's on Sol- 4332 (March 31, 2016). The rover spied it while looking down into Endeavour Crater after driving out of “Marathon Valley”. #Mars #Opportunity #MER #Perseverance #NASA #JPL

What would be more appropriate for the summer solstice than a picture of the Sun itself?

Now less than an hour to summer solstice for #Perseverance, although it's going to be night in Jezero Crater when it happens.

However, for those celebrating the solstice on the peak sanctuary of Olympus Mons (an ancient Minoan custom that's now common on Mars, too 🙃 ), it will be a sunny morning, with temperatures ranging (checks NASA's Mars Meteo site…, nope, still dead) above 0°C, appropriate for Minoan dressing customs that want women bare-breasted and men almost naked.

Looks as if #Perseverance was chased out of Krokodillen by a dust devil 😀 🙃, but outran it!

Summer solstice coming up in 7 ½ hours, in the northern hemisphere of Mars (i.e. when Lₛ → 90°, now at 89.81°).

Watch it live 😎 🙃 along with #Perseverance and #Ingenuity¹ (which is presently watching sand shift in the light summer breeze at the Valinor Hills beach), with Mars24, a Java program by #NASA, based on equations by Allison and McEwen:
