After taking over Alberta Health Services property to "lease" them back to AHS, so that Danielle Smith's ever-growing private surgery clinics can now take over formerly public infrastructure, the UCP is now doing the same to municipal public schools in Calgary and Edmonton (both cities have the same joint-use agreements between the city and school boards).

Basically, land owned by the city and the public/catholic school boards are jointly used to provide play and recreation to the community. The UCP wants to strip municipalities of these properties, letting them be turned over to private "charter" schools, which have now been renamed to "independent schools" in Alberta to hide their private ownership, following the UCP's long-term plan started under Jason Kenney as "Choice in Education" to put ever more public funds into the hands of private schools.

This is absolutely horrifying. When they did this to our healthcare system, it was absolutely horrifying. It's just horrors compounded upon horrors, as the UCP continues to gut our public healthcare and education systems, to privatize every important need and put our public dollars into the hands of profiteering middlemen so they can reduce our services while increasing our costs, to further their profit margin. I am livid.

"Elon Musk will not be fully exiting the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—and its activities are only intensifying. On Friday, President Donald Trump threw cold water on the idea that Musk would fully disappear from DOGE and the White House forever. Members of Musk’s early DOGE team, including Luke Farritor, Gavin Kliger, Edward Coristine, and Sam Corcos, have met with a number of departments and agencies—including the Treasury, the Office of Management and Budget, and the FBI—in recent days, seemingly continuing business as usual, WIRED has learned.

The team also appears to be actively recruiting, according to documents viewed by WIRED."

The company takes the money and doesn’t even use it to pay for trash services. And advocates for privatization often say “I don’t have kids using these facilities anymore why should i have to pay for it?” For the same reason your parents paid for it, “boomer,” for our country’s future generations. (Across the street the park is under city control)

Today in Labor History May 17, 1954: Brown v. Board of Education went into effect. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled that "separate but equal" public education was unconstitutional, and a violation of the 14th Amendment. The ruling reversed the 1896 "separate but equal" Plessy vs Ferguson decision. However, researchers at Stanford and USC have recently found that, in spite of this SCOTUS ruling, racial segregation in the nation’s 100 largest school districts has increased by 64% since 1988, while economic segregation increased by 50% since 1991. While residential segregation was a major driving force for school segregation in the past, the primary driving force for today’s segregation is the School Choice movement, which has allowed hundreds of charter schools to open up, many for-profit. During the 2021-2022 school year, 7.4% of all public-school students, 3.7 million kids, attended charter schools. And there tends to be much more segregation within charter schools. Additionally, there has been a decline in court oversight of segregation in schools, resulting from a number of lawsuits in the 1990s against affirmative action policies.
