Decade Old Ubuntu Server Flaw

Observations:

The needrestart package has some issues, tracked under the following CVE's: CVE-2024-48990, CVE-2024-48991, CVE-2024-48992, CVE-2024-10224, and CVE-2024-11003.

The issue here is that local privilege escalate becomes possible.

To remediate this issue, quoted from the linked article:

"To prevent the exploitation of the flaw Qualys researchers recommend disabling the interpreter scanning feature in needrestart by modifying its configuration file, typically located at /etc/needrestart/needrestart.conf. Add the line $nrconf{interpscan} = 0; to disable interpreter scanners and block the vulnerability."

Who does the research, who owns the responsibility for determining the fix?

No user calls the Help Desk asking them to apply a specific Solution, they call with a Problem. Is vulnerability management really any different?

PFAS “forever chemicals” are everywhere, including in groundwater and soil. Getting them out has for years involved pumping, treating and trucking, with varied results. A company called Regenesis has introduced a solution called SourceStop that uses activated carbon to, as the name suggests, stop PFAS contamination on site, in the ground.

Twenty phone companies may soon have all their voice calls blocked by US carriers because they didn't submit real plans for preventing robocalls on their networks.
The 20 carriers include a mix of US-based and foreign voice service providers that submitted required "robocall mitigation" plans to the Federal Communications Commission about two years ago. I'm posting about this because almost no one locally even knows we have been working hard at #remediation for decades so far. I'm 48 yrs old now. I joined remediation efforts when I was 29 yrs old.
We have never stopped trying to remediate this area. Most locals still have no idea about the true history of the area either. Graverobbers & other #unethical human scavenger types stole a lot of evidence from the site & that's made it harder for #decolonization work on ground.

As part of my new ongoing project to #volunteer for #environmental #remediation projects, in defiance of climate doom-saying, today I joined an #Earthcorps group, removing #invasive plants from a local #park.

Basically, I helped weed a forest.

It was fun.

(It also wore me out. Never thought 2+ hours pulling ivy out by the roots would tire me out so much.)

I've decided to stop buying into #climate #doomism, after many years of not being able to avoid feeling and spreading it.

Instead, I've been reading up on individual efforts, and it's amazing what individuals and their communities can accomplish. I want to do what they're doing.

I'm determined to participate in local #remediation/#re-wilding projects.

Will also expand the container garden on my decks to include plants that attract #pollinators.
