The late June evening was heavy and warm. Long shadows stretched across the field. A low sun sank deeper into the night.
With the farmer nowhere to be seen, Penelope squeezed under the fence and trotted towards the apple tree that stood upon an isle of shade.

We sat by Johnny's bed, not knowing if he would live or die, listening to each #shallow inhale, like the thinnest film of surf rushing up a shingle beach, and then the exhale, sliding back out to sea. Kasseh looked at her apprehensively.
"You're going to make me swim, aren't you?"

"It's too deep."
Cecelia looked at her reproachfully. "It is not! It's very #shallow until way out there." She extended her hand. "Don't be shy!"
