That's good to know. When I opened the SimpleX app it only seems to give options for two commercial providers. I didn't see any option to add an arbitrary server, like what Element does. Under Settings > Network & Servers, I the only options I see are #SImpleX Chat servers and Flux (their sponsor). Where do you add a self hosted server to the client app?

And yes, you're right, the messages aren't permanently stored on those servers. They seem to be more as a relay.

I am a little ashamed at how OCD I am about this... but is there any way to set custom contact pictures for contacts on SimpleX??

Are #Signal and #Session the go to for being the most anonymous messaging apps that are encrypted? I’ve used #SimpleX chat in the past.

Delta Chat outright lacks forward secrecy, and also doesn't use post-quantum cryptography.

XMPP and IRC are a mess, and essentially unusable for less technical users.
When considering or recommending a messenger, always ask yourself: Would your grandma be able to use it? If she encountered some issue, would she be able to find someone, other than you, who could fix it? That unfortunately rules out a bunch of messengers.

I think best option is to use the @mollyim client for Signal. The second best choice would be @simplex

Das ist ebenfalls #OpenSource und dazu noch dezentral und damit nochmal deutlich besser als Signal.

#DeltaChat is quite good either way using existing email and doing the encryption for you (not the subject header) so even #Google mail / #Gmail users can use it with a bit of cover away from everything copied to Google...
