Have any of you ever travelled between London and Stockholm by train? #SlowTravel
A friend just told me that Stena Line has a Foot Passenger Sale running till the 1st April.
€17 one way instead of the normal €50 economy fare.
There’s no amendments or refunds but it’s nice to see a foot passenger focused offer.
If you’re planning onward rail travel with Interrail it’s an especially good deal. Otherwise you might be better off sticking with the SailRail tickets

Are you visiting #Skye this year? My new Skye and the #InnerHebrides guidebook recommends the island's most interesting nooks and crannies, with lots of good reasons to take your time exploring.
(self-promotion is difficult, but I do believe in this book link: https://www.bradtguides.com/product/skye-the-inner-hebrides-2/)

Slow Travel Polska makes good, informative videos about places in Poland. Subtitles in English are available. This one is about Poznań, a city that I'm ashamed to admit haven't visited properly, despite being one of the largest cities in Poland.
One interesting fact from the video is that after WW2, much of the Old Market Square was not restored to how it looked like just before the war, but in much earlier times...
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original…

What is likely my one work trip without family this year is to Graz (and @axelmaas and @suchi_kulkarni). Do I risk the following affordable, but long and risky journey:
day 1:
- Train from Helsinki to Turun satama (dep 17.35, arr 19.49)
- Ferry to Stockholm (dep 20.55, arr 06.30)
day 2:
- Train to Malmö central (dep 07.24, arr 11.52)
- Train to Copenhagen central (many trains)
- Train to Hamburg hbf (dep 14.22, arr 19.00)
- Night train to Linz (dep 20.10, arr 07.43,
timetable not confirmed but bookable)
day 3:
- Train to Graz (dep 07.55, arr 11.03, there are plenty of later trains)
I've done all of this as far as Hamburg (and beyond) many times, but I wonder what it would be like doing this combination? I would be on one ticket from Stockholm to Copenhagen and then another from Copenhagen through to Graz.
Also this would be two nights of travel for (only!) one night actually there. Would I be better to fly both ways and try to find another institute to visit?
I've been travelling like this for many years, but this feels like the most time-constrained (and disproportionate) overland journey I've ever contemplated...
Table for four. Northbound Bray head. The sleeper. The business man and his phone conversation. The lady who lunches, busy in the throes of her full makeup routine.
And I, the fly.
Very pleased with showing in my hometown of Milan the story of my 42.000km no-fly journey to research climate adaptation. Some people even shed some tears.Carlo Monguzzi & Simonetta D'Amico councillors of @ComuneMI & @MassimoCirri for collaborating in the event. The trailer of the film by P. After FOSDEM is over, I spend one last night in Brussels to recover, and I like to change pace the next day.
I walk to the train station, which never disappoints in a city like Brussels, and then take the train that brings me back home, slowly.
Seems like cows took all the best parking spots...
Off on a bike trip through Rajasthan in northern India. No other way but on a Royal Enfield!
Sometimes, traces of the past haunt our landscapes discreetly. An incongruously thick wall across a wooded valley. Border infrastructures left over from war and conflict, easy to miss from a train window. This was once the #GothicLine, a place of fierce battles in Northern Tuscany, during WW2. There are many more, more photographed places along this line, like the superb Ponte della Maddalena. But I search out the ghosts, the lines, the stones. #Bornées #AlongTheLine #slowTravel #Trains

When I moved to mementomori.social I just copied and pasted my old introduction, so it's time for a new one!
I'm David (or D. or Dave). I'm queer, I'm nonbinary, I'm a parent, I'm a physicist, and I live in Helsinki. I'm currently working 50% part time so I can take care of my kid.
On Fedi I post in a personal capacity about things that interest me. That does include physics, but also how to make academia (and society) a friendlier, more welcoming place. I try to learn about, develop and put into use innovative teaching and supervision methods.
I love trains and slow travel, but I'm not really travelling so much these days since becoming a parent. I therefore try to highlight the need for scientific conferences and events to be hybrid or online, amongst other accessibility measures that benefit everyone.
The outdoors is my happy place, I spend lots of time wandering around (or these days pushing a buggy), and enjoy hiking when I can. Still trying to improve my bird recognition skills. I love gardening and gardens as well, and hope to have one I can potter about in again quite soon.
I always try to add alt text, always grateful for feedback on improving what I write.
I communicate in Finnish at B2 level and French at B1 level (this means I can listen to the radio and read news articles in both languages), but this account is mostly in English. Do please however feel free to write to me in Finnish or French, and apologies in advance for typos in my replies.
It can be very tempting but I try not to boost, interact with or bring up politics here, except how it intersects with my above interests. I have filters set up for many politics keywords. Politics matters a lot to me, but this is not where I discuss it, and this way I keep Fedi a place of joy for me.
I CW at least selfies, food and drink, and direct politics references.
Feel free to follow me, but unless we've interacted, I'm unlikely to follow back to keep my feed manageable.
