The next #thinkpad on my #workbench is a #W510 – it has an #eSATA port as well as multiple #USB3 ports, #expresscard, #displayport, #smartcard, memory card reader, #DVD/#CDRW, with a max 16GM of #DDR3 #RAM so it can run #Win11 (if you are careful) or #linux with ease. This will be a good replacement for my workbench laptop for testing and #wiping #HardDrives and #SSDs

But: the processor is only an i7-Q270 1.6 Ghz
This will be a dog with #Windoz

So I am researching which & where to get a #CPU upgrade.
According to #thinkwiki thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:W5 Some models came with an Intel Quad Core Extreme Processor i7-920XM (2.0GHz 1333MHz 8MB L3).

But wowzas the couple I found were expensive as all hell.

Any thoughts on
a) where to find one of these #CPUs at a reasonable cost; possibly locally in the SF bay area?
b) Is/are there other #CPUs that would work in the W510 motherboard that would provide more bang for the buck?

TIA!

Question for the #cryptography enthusiasts:

Looking to get a physical token based solution for PGP (strictly email and ssh key use - FIDO2 etc not required). Have narrowed it down to the OpenPGP Smart Card (V3.4) or the Nitrokey 3A Mini. Both are produced in Europe.

Anyone have thoughts about one or the other? Any benchmarks? other pointers?

Use a GPG smartcard with Thunderbird. Part 3: Setup Thunderbird

stafwag.github.io/blog/blog/20

In previous blog posts, we discussed setting up a GPG smartcard on GNU/Linux and FreeBSD.

In this blog post, we will configure Thunderbird to work with an external smartcard reader and our GPG-compatible smartcard.

Where are some good places to buy OpenPGP cards? Is there some shop in Sweden that sells them? #AskFedi #OpenPGP #pgp #SmartCard

Added #smartcard / #etoken support to #chrome to #manjaro #gnome with #opensc / #pcscd. Works fine client certificate auth in browser, but fails with ssh connection in shell. askpass installed. Looks like etoken is requested, but no pin prompt.
Any idea which pakage could be missing?

After more than 10 years, my #Yubikey NEO partially broke: It doesn't respond via NFC anymore. USB is still fine.

Good thing I already had a 5C lying around as replacement. I just didn't come around earlier to migrate my #GPG keys and all the #2FA to the new token.

And man, that's a speed difference! The 5C barely needs to touch the back of my phone to complete the crypto operations, while the NEO took several seconds (and oftentimes lost connection on the way).

The problem with YubiKey and other smart cards is that their decisions are leading the implementation. One such is that you can't clone keys even if you own it.

In reality, this only hinders cloning but doesn't prevent it. Who in their sane mind thinks that YubiKey is safe if you lose it? Nobody, so why can't we allow cloning it? Why is cloning reserved only for hardware hackers?

Working on a timelines of the events leading to the development of contacless payments. It's a lot more than I expected. I think i might have to separate this into #radio detection, #SmartCard development, #NFC development, and the integration points. Might mention #java and #JavaCard too.

During our work towards openpgp-card v0.5 (fosstodon.org/@hko/11252048626), we wondered how to deal with secrets in log files.

It's often good if secrets are redacted in logs: This avoids accidental publication of a user PIN (or decrypted payload) in bug reports.
On the other hand, it can be useful for a developer to have full and verbatim logs (including secrets) for debugging.

We started work on this, but would like to hear from you. What should we do?

Did my taxes via government website... And now I want to scream about #smartcard support on #Linux...
Why the hell login via identity card is so much pain every damn time?!?

I don't understand why the heck #smartcard support on #Linux, at least in my experience is so awful nightmare...
