@kuenefe it depends...I've been using the #Forgejo instance hosted by @disroot since I already have an account. For @snipette I used to maintain a dedicated Gitea (later Forgejo) instance installed via #YunoHost, because we had a bunch of tools that we wanted to publish

The "go-to" option nowadays is @Codeberg (again running Forgejo), which we use for @prav

Besides Forgejo, there are a bunch of more minimal options like #sourcehut and #humungus

Bravo to SourceHut for making noise about this. No, site operators should not just "handle this volume of traffic". Foisting rising resource requirements on site operators will centralize the web.

I can now see my patch in the log, but the patch is wrong! I have the commit locally and in my email and I can confirm that I did a small change and added 13 lines, but the #sourcehut shows 790 insertions and 776 deletions !! Something is really wrong and I cannot understand what

My biggest struggle when contributing to a project that uses git send-email (e.g., things on #sourcehut) is that when the patch is sent, it is as if I'm shouting in a void. There is no way to know if someone else have done the same patch or if I have even sent emailed it to the correct address.

I don't think centralization can be avoided completely. Or LLMs.

However, by using the services of #SourceHut or #Codeberg, I believe, one acts rather than says: "I trust you. I support you. Fight this fight for me. I'm too small/busy/specialized, but you can do it! I care."

That's why I struggle with these lovely open source alternatives my original question is about. What these projects care about? What's their added value?

I'm considering setting up a mailing list for the blog. i was wondering how i could go about writing a script or build function on my Sourcehut that would convert every new post into an email that it then sends to, say a Sourcehut list? maybe Emacs has something i could use?

Thanks for sharing @sarahjamielewis, great to see more work being done on independent code-forging. Have you given any consideration to interoperation with other forges? Eg implementing @forgefed along with @forgejo and others who are working on that. Or using Git's inbuilt features to interop with SourceHut instances.

Trying to create a #codeberg account and I find out that my usual username is already taken... and I don't think I created myself. Aaarrgghh!
(I also created one on #sourcehut just for this reason)

Also I would really like to see decentralized #code #hosting grow. #Development is not only about the code itself (git is already decentralized) but also issues, roadmap... around it.

Today, I am announcing plans for the biggest change to Pandora's Tale Wiki since its founding: I am going to port the wiki away from MediaWiki and convert it to a git repository of text files. This conversion process may not be easy, but it is necessary. If we continue down the current path, I am going to burn out and will not be able to continue maintaining the wiki. There are still some things I need to determine.

1) First and most significantly, I have to figure out how to convert a MediaWiki instance into a git repository. I've found several scripts which claim to do it, but they all seem to have significant drawbacks in addition to being unmaintained. I would greatly appreciate advice from computer creatures in this regard.

2) Then I have to decide on the text format: Plaintext, gemtext, or markdown? There are ups and downs to each of them, though I'm not as worried since I believe it might be possible to convert between them later.

3) Finally I have to decide on the hosting software and platform if I want anyone else to be able to read it. Gitlab, Forgejo, sourcehut, or something else?

Once I answer these questions, I am going to move Pandora's Tale Wiki to a git repository, and then I will ask Miraheze to shut down their copy of the wiki. I don't know how long this process will take, but I believe it's the only way I can continue the wiki.
