Perl is not my favourite language, but I admit that its #regex syntax did a tonne of good for #programming.

We need a similar boost to the #bit twiddling syntax. I like the sensibility of C and Erlang bit-manipulation syntax.

Also, we geeks need to agree on how we clean up that politically induced mess that is the #timezone.

Timezone definition update for smartwatches rolls out

Recently, the timezone definition for smartwatches running Wear OS based on Android has been updated to support the latest changes made to some of the timezones. According to the IANA timezone database that Android uses, your smartwatch gets the latest timezone information from such database that uses the official timezone definitions according to your country’s government.

Some countries have ceased using summer time, and some others still use the summer time. The database reflects all the changes to the timezones according to each city in each country.

Now, people have started getting the timezone definition update through a small notification saying that their watch has been updated to use the latest timezone definitions and to reboot it to finalize the update. This was the notification:

In order to update the timezone definitions, restart your watch using the Restart now button found in the notification. If you have dismissed the notification, the next time you restart your watch, the timezone definition update will be installed. The update will be installed instantly and in no time, unlike major software updates, such as the upcoming One UI 7 Watch (or is it One UI 6.5 Watch?).

Totally by chance, I figured this out. It turns out that an old #nodered flow was triggering the switch. But here's where added confusion comes in. I'm running node-red through a #docker container with my #timezone set via an env variable.

Node-red shows the last time that a node was triggered underneath the node. For whatever reason, the time triggered is different than the time of my automation (Inject node). The time that it does run, in my #irl timezone, is the time set in the node.

Why is Google calendar so rubbish with timezones?

In November, United Kingdom Time isn't GMT+1, but +0. And Amsterdam and Athens are an hour wrong in its timezone description, in this same form.

It seems it "correctly" used GMT+1 (for Amsterdam time) though.

Clocks have changed! Most clocks changed themselves, but the Kitchen Oven + Microwave clocks had to be changed manually.

Wall clock time is now back to UTC.

Entering an event in the #Thunderbird calendar, using a remote #timezone, is a pain in the neck. Am I supposed to click on the date it will happen here, or the date it will happen there? Whatever I do, it seems to end up on the wrong day, at least when I try adding repeats - and then if I try to edit it, I get multiple events.

Using Region/City for a #timezone picker is a pain - if the city I'm interested in doesn't happen to be the one available to pick, how am I supposed to find it?
In this case, I look for America/Texas/Houston, and it's not there. America/Texas/anything isn't there. So what state/city should I look for? This is #Thunderbird, btw.
