Normally, the father is the one listed as naming the children, but it's Eve who names both Cain and Abel in Genesis 3. Adam isn't involved.

Eve names Seth, but in Gen 5 (spoiler!), the text says Adam does, so the implication is that they both did.

And perhaps this is the point.

We always call it the story of "Cain & Abel," but this ignores a critical part of the story.

Eve assumes God will use Cain. We assume God will use Abel. But our assumptions are dashed by murder.

The right name of the story should be "Not Cain, not Abel, but through Seth."

Cain’s question, “am I my brother’s keeper” is quite tragic. The word “keeper” is means to protect, to guard, to celebrate over, to watch for.

It’s what God does for us, and what we are commanded to do for one another.

Yes. You are your brother’s keeper.

Do you remember the stories in the Gospels where Jesus is amazed at the faith of certain people? The Centurion, the Canaanite woman, etc.

When God saw Abel’s sacrifice in Genesis 4:4, this is the word used to describe God seeing his offering.

I don’t believe in pre-sin accountability for Adam, so I don’t blame him for not stopping his wife from eating the fruit.

But Adam is noticeably absent from any mention of the raising of his sons.

In Genesis 4, Eve gives an explanation for naming her first son. Upon careful inspection, the text doesn't say that she gave Abel the same attention.

In the first 2 verses, I think we're meant to understand that Eve favored Cain. Perhaps she believed the Promise was about him.

Perhaps every single instance of “do not fear” in the scriptures points to this:

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” (Genesis 3:10)

We read in Genesis 3 that after disobedience, God "drove out" the man from the garden. It feels like we've been kicked out. Banished. Hell?

The word is used again later in a story linked to something important: it's the word used when Sarah drives out Hagar. (Gen 21:10)
