This is a sad evening. By the time this posts, my WoW sub will have expired. I will not be renewing it.
I have played WoW since 2006. I have played it almost as long as all my relationships combined. (There's been a couple sizable gaps between 'ships, yo.) I have dozens of alts. 2 years played time (yeah, not THAT much considering, but I also play other games and have taken a couple year long breaks.)
WoW had always been there as an excellent escape from reality when I needed it most. Even recently, when He Who Shall Remain Orange won the election, I started a new alt in WoW Classic and the month long grind to 60 helped me cope.
Not any more. Upon learning that Microsoft had donated to his Inauguration, I began seriously considering ending my sub. I also immediately cancelled my Game Pass Sub. I am selling my Series X to a neighbor as it is useless now without that sub. I started playing through the War Within campaign, 99% sure it would be my last. But a little voice in me still said "well, maybe..."
That died when M$ signed the AI contract with Musk.
I finished the campaign and played through the recently added goblin city Undermine and any other one time quests I could find. This last month was mostly just running around trying to make sure I'd seen all I wanted to see. That included creating and max leveling an Earthen by "Timewalking" through the Burning Crusade expansion one last time.
This last week I logged onto and took all my alts to places I had enjoyed the most during the nearly 20 years I played. I took a screen shot of them and logged out, leaving them there. I saved my very first character for last. Mathodne, human Warlock, 'born" in early 2006. I left him in Hallowfall, as it's my fave zone of the War Within.
Fuck Microsoft. I hate doing this but I hated knowing where my money would be going more.
