The scale of academic misconduct is amazing, and to a certain degree it is now powered by AI. One almost unchallenged aspect of the problem is fake research data.

Survey of academic integrity violations i the UK found almost 7,000 proven cases of cheating using AI tools in 2023-24, or 5.1 for every 1,000 students, and increase from 1.6 cases per 1,000 in 2022-23. Indications are it will increase to ~ 7.5 proven cases per 1,000 students. Discovered cases represent only the tip of the iceberg.

In 2019-20, before the widespread availability of generative AI, plagiarism accounted for nearly two-thirds of all academic misconduct.

All of this is to say that these institutions only care about plagiarism if someone they care about is making them care.

So when such accusations just happen to come up and are taken seriously in the case of a Black woman who isn't immediately knuckling under to what white supremacist forces in this country desire, it's for a reason. Absolutely nothing of consequence happened. The first author stonewalled even citing. No real investigation was conducted and I know this because no one contacted me to view the evidence I had, nor did anyone interview the co-author who said they'd argued for citation pre-publication. #AcademicMisconduct #UCAccessNow @academicchatter

After I posted about the academic misconduct on Twitter, that PhD candidate was given a mtg with the Executive Director of Strategic so they could get tips on how to "manage" this...despite the fact we are both grad students at UC Davis. So prior to any investigation into the allegations of academic misconduct, UC Davis put its weight behind the more politically connected student. Thread 1/5: Since plagiarism's being discussed again, I wanted to give an example of just how much prestige higher ed institutions do not care about academic misconduct unless someone they actually care about is forcing them to pay attention to it.

I am undertaking research into attitudes towards and perceptions of contract cheating, within UK-based higher education.

Below is a link to an anonymous survey, which takes around 5-10 minutes to complete. The survey can be taken by #Students or #Teachers / #Lecturers / #Professors / #Tutors / #Instructors or anybody who has taught in some capacity at a UK-based higher educational facility. It does not matter if you reside in the UK, just that you taught / studied at a UK-based institution, no matter how long ago.

I just gave a #GenerativeAI workshop for some 300 high-school students in a program of Toronto's Lifelong Leadership Institute. The LLI serves the Candian Jamaican, Carribean and Black community with #education opportunities. We opened with the most meaningful #LandAcknowledgement I have ever heard (by a participant), and I got to have a spirited conversation with a group of wonderful, well informed, smart, and curious students.

Some take-aways:

We polled uptake:
- About 1/3 of students have not used #ChatGPT so far;
- About 1/3 have used it only a few times overall;
- About 1/3 use it regularly. Interesting: of those who use it regularly, the majority are frequent users, i.e. either you have not used it for some reason, or you use it a lot. Not much middle ground.

... and one question stood out: how can we implement the new thinking around generative AI in classroom practice? Indeed, how. We need to grow practice. I always look for a win-win angle - coercion is the wrong way, but on this topic it is particularly easy: figuring out solutions is absolutely a topic that learners and lecturers must approach shoulder to shoulder. In this case it means: "Better learning support for students, deeper questions for educators".

Of course, the question of #academicMisconduct always comes up: my mantra is "Have the AI think with you, not for you". From that perspective we can avoid making this the next battleground. Liberalize - and teach how the AI's level of performance can no longer be a passing grade. Because that quality is what your future employer gets for free.

#Plagiarism? Open it up. #Alignment? Stop thinking about controls and democratize it instead. #Bing? Yes, that psychotic episode created a foundational piece of writing. Jobs? That's on us: to educate society the value of the human touch. #Sentience? No. But #emergence! It does more than what it was trained for. The future? IDK. I really don't. But stay in control. Learn what it can do, and then determine what it should do for us (always good advice).

What are the equity implications Academic Misconduct from use of ChatGPT/AI?

Keep asking myself: Who is likely to be accused of using AI tools for academic misconduct? How will biases/expectations about English or academic language skills play into this?

I"m not seeing this in the discourse much on academic implications of generative AI.

Interesting to see that UBC's Academic Integrity now has a FAQ on ChatGPT/AI.
