Last one that really needs a mention for #TuneTuesday‘s theme #SciFiSongs is the band Public Service Broadcasting, not metal, but pure prog, utilising real sounds from archived recordings to tell story, this album documents the #SpaceRace including an homage to the fatal incident of #Apollo1. It is a great listen for #spaceNerds and #progNerds alike.

Songlink/OdesliTo save on labor costs, North American had used machines to bundle the miles of #wires that snaked through the #Apollo spacecraft, the arrangement of which seemed arbitrary to Young. Some wires even appeared frayed. As he surveyed the capsule that Grissom, White, and Chaffee were to fly in, Young saw a seemingly endless amount of short circuits https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/01/the-hell-of-apollo-1-pure-oxygen-a-single-spark-and-death-in-17-seconds/

This is Launch Complex 34 at Cape #Canaveral Air Force Station.
During a test of the #Apollo command and service modules and a Saturn I rocket in preparation for the Apollo 1 mission, a small spark from an unknown origin, combined with pure oxygen environment, allowed a fire to break out and essentially used all the oxygen in the combustion reaction, killing mission commander Gus Grissom, senior pilot Ed White, and pilot Roger Chaffee nearly instantly.
LC-34 was abandoned-in-place after the last Saturn launch was decommissioned.
It remains as a #memorial.

Outside Moffitt Library on the UC Berkeley campus are several display cases with reprinted newspaper front pages from around the world.
On Fridays, one case is dedicated to a historical event that took place that week. This was yesterday’s, the LA Times front page from January 28, 1967. #apollo1
Here is a CBS News special report on the #Apollo1 tragedy 56 years ago #OTD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSWUnWOMdTk - it had aired on the same evening and came with a lot of background information, not on the cause of the accident, of course, but on the #Apollo program in general.
We remember and will never forget their sacrifice.
