What a fine piece of software Clonezilla is 🫡

Only if I had used this before I wouldn't have needed to buy a new disk everytime the current disk fails, I can just wait for the disk to come from RMA and I can boot the cloned disk till then.

Only issue is that cloning the disk is a manual process, having to boot the Clonezilla live USB.

I can clone my 2TB nVME SSD to external WD SN 580 in under 2 hours.

Meanwhile I got a new Blade S70 (1TB) from RMA and I attached the heatsink from it on my Kioxia G3 plus in the laptop, thermals were already good and heatsink was an added protection.

When I received my WD SN 580 from RMA I converted it to external nVME SSD using enclosure from ShuoLe 👇🏾as it had a display for showing the temps as getting the correct temps from external nVME enclosures are a pain.

This is my exclusive clonezilla backup drive now.

After I tested for system stability I started thinking on how to prevent further disk failures and when it happens how to make it less painful to restore.

Full disk cloning.

I'm going to clone my entire disk quite regularly along with my existing timeshift, borg backups.

I used Clonezilla in memory mode to take my first full disk clone back up and stored it in my homelab's hard disk.

And it was definitely not easy!

I rsynced timeshift to root and struggled couple of days to restore /home from the Borg mount as I messed up the mount points.

I changed the UUIDs of the drives in the fstab, crypttab and reinstalled grub; but for some reason the grub kept looking for old UUID of the Luks root partition.

I had to manually edit the UUID to unlock and fix the issue by reinstalling kernel/grub. Had to restore the SELinux contexts as well to boot.

This is your friendly reminder to do back-ups for your files. When have you last done a back-up? Maybe it is time for one? I am doing one now. 🙂

I've also been testing moving my (multiple Mac) Time Machine backups to the NAS, and learned how to set (and adjust!) quotas for that. I'll probably get at least one or two hard drives off of individual computers that way.

I have a mini Intel Atom-powered home server in my house.

However, I’ve overlooked two things:

How do I back up data and keep it safe (from both security and quality perspectives)?

I’m still a newbie at GnuPG Privacy Guard. How do I secure the backup of my private keys?
