I picked up a copy of "Blades in the Dark" this week, and have been looking through it.

Liking what I'm seeing so far, and I have to say the internet folks who said "Candela Obscura is a cut-down version of Blades in the Dark" were on to something, there's a very strong resemblance.

At least that means the mechanics are going to be really familiar...

#BITD CN signals were approach-lit except at interlockings like 55th Ave (which is now just east of VIA Dorval now & not at 55th!) where they were always lit. AFAIK, CN's line from (say) Turcot (because I don't recall the name of the subdivision out past Dorval where it became the Kingston Sub, was always bidirectionally signaled. That wasn't always true on the adjacent CP subs but I think it is now. The signal regime on CP is different, too,…

It's the permissions.

Maybe.

#BITD, we used to say that "90% of UNIX problems are permission-related" and we were often right which means ... something-something numbers. And given that MacOS is still mostly UNIX (not that UNIX is really a thing any more), it might still be related.

Just finished GMing our sixth session of #Genesys Doskvol. The PCs used almost all their downtime on reducing heat from their previous splashy heist, then headed into the Lost District to cross two small tasks off their job board. They had their first combat encounter ever.

When *I* say #BITD, I mean early 1980s. You don't know the pain of trying to get down town on the 207-203 (or walk from 202)-191 to L-G ... 😄

#BackInTheDay and before there were ANY communications devices in the buses, the 211 would often take different routes west from L-G. Sometimes you'd end up on A-20 from A-15, sometimes from Notre Dame (remember when the A-20 roadways were flipped through the now-gone Turcot Yard) and sometimes other ways. Of course traffic levels were lower #BITD ... Inbound, I only remember the route coming down the Rose de Lima ramp from what was A-720.

@skylinetombs My first thought is, how does that information reach Doskvol? Who lets it spread around? A lot of the factions with wealth and power would want to maintain the status quo even without some distant emperor in existence. It's not the distant emperor who's been oppressing the poor folks, it's the local elite.

I think the first to riot/celebrate would be Skovlanders who are keen to resume their lost war.

(Also, someone's still got to keep the barriers operating.)

So, had a #BitD session zero with another group. We landed on a gang that owns and operates a burlesque bar for ghosts, who pay with ectotoplasm for their services. They trade the ectotoplasm with other interested parties for coin. Not only did I not expect this.particular group to run wild, I certainly didn't expect such strong connection's to the world. Will be good. 😁

@greenWhale Well, for one, I can tell you that they're not playing Blades in the Dark and you're letting them not play Blades in the Dark. One of the chief axioms of play is “Drive it like you stole it” in reference to your character.

If they feel like they've got time to endlessly plan and talk, then they aren't out there driving it like they stole it. They're not feeling the pressure to accomplish things; they're just feeling pressure, which means they don't feel like they need anything that's going to push them out of that safe space.

They're not hungry. Your job is to make them hungry. Part of that very well could be simply not giving them the chance to be otherwise.

I assume that you finished up downtime at the end of the last session, however long ago that was. That means this session absolutely should have kicked off with a banger in media res. If they want to talk to people and investigate, it needs to be in flashbacks. Right here, right now, they are in the shit and have to make decisions appropriately.

Particularly after a break in play, you absolutely have to get right back into the thick of things and make it be really hot; otherwise, the engine just doesn't turn over.

@greenWhale isn't #bitd designed around flashbacks rather than planning? You might need to just not allow them to do so much planning.

A recap at the beginning of the session is often a good idea anyway. Since you don't write a plot for BITD, you could ask one of the players to do it if you like

BitD yesterday was a disaster. The players didn't remember anything about previous sessions and started endlessly planning and talking to gather information. Next time around I'll need to spoon-feed them their opportunities more. Anyone got tips? #BitD #ttrpg

Session three in my BitD campaign today. They will try and use the Weeping Lady's charities as a opposites illicit messages and goods because they found out the Lamp lacks were planning on doing so. Meanwhile they have pissed of the Unseen and the Crows as well as the former Lamplighters guild and made an ally of the Red Sashes. Plenty to work with here. 😁

@apontious Mainly we use Genesys rules, but we play in Doskvol, our characters are based on Blades playbooks, and I adapted the Blades Downtime and Load mechanics to use with Genesys. So far, the two tastes seem to be going great together, to judge by my players' responses. :v)

I'm starting up three different ttfpg campaigns and it's interesting how many similarities there are, but also many differences. And having started quite a few campaigns in the past makes me a little better at grasping those important but often forgotten elements of a session zero, like player expectations and kickstarting role play through bonding of the PC's.
