@GrapheneOS here's a wild idea that is almost certainly not practical... #BitTorrent?

Tribler v8.1.2
=> tribler.org

Towards making Bittorrent anonymous and impossible to shut down.

We use our own dedicated Tor-like network for anonymous torrent downloading. We implemented and enhanced the Tor protocol specifications plus merged them with Bittorrent streaming.
More info: github.com/Tribler/tribler/wik
Tribler includes our own Tor-like onion routing network with hidden services based seeding and end-to-end encryption, detailed specs: github.com/Tribler/tribler/wik

The aim of Tribler is giving anonymous access to online (streaming) videos. We are trying to make privacy, strong cryptography and authentication the Internet norm.

Tribler currently offers a Youtube-style service. For instance, Bittorrent-compatible streaming, fast search, thumbnail previews and comments. For the past 11 years we have been building a very robust Peer-to-Peer system. Today Tribler is robust: "the only way to take Tribler down is to take The Internet down" (but a single software bug could end everything).

I was curious about ZeroNet again today. ZeroNet was a #P2P web project from the 2010s along similar lines to I2P (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I2P) and #Tor hidden services. The idea of hosting dynamic webpages in a completely P2P fashion, like torrents, remains super cool and appealing to me. In fact, at one point the #BitTorrent company had a similar proposal (bittorrent.com/blog/2014/12/10).

The ZeroNet website (zeronet.io/) is still up, but the project hasn't been updated in five years as per the GitHub repo (github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNe). Someone was maintaining a fork at some point, and at other times I heard that ZeroNet was (now?) insecure, although I know no details. Certainly anything P2P isn't anonymous by default.

I found this question (github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNe) about the creator of ZeroNet. Disturbingly, this article (newsbtc.com/news/sam-maloney-c) about a different developer killed by the police under unusual circumstances was shared.

My impression was that ZeroNet actually worked (works?) to some extent. Why aren't projects like this being funded? We need censorship-resistant ways of communicating online, after all.

Nearly 20 years ago, we built something radical. #VisionOnTV wasn’t just another platform, it was a #4opens movement. A bold attempt to break free from corporate-controlled media and give people the tools to create and share activist-driven, alternative television. We weren’t waiting for permission; we were building the future we wanted to see.

Before #YouTube became the advertising surveillance monolith it is today, we had a different vision. One where video wasn’t just disposable clickbait, but a tool for social change. The project was to curated hard-hitting documentaries, radical comedy, underground music, and voices that #mainstreaming #TV wouldn’t touch. Unlike the corporate “content farms”, our focus was on nurturing quality grassroots storytelling, ensuring activist media was just as compelling as anything on TV.

Technically, we were ahead of the curve. Using #Bittorrent for distribution, #Miro for viewing, and Creative Commons licensing, VisionOnTV se out to build a decentralized media network, a vision that today’s #PeerTube is still catching up to. We worked for a world where people weren’t just passive consumers, but active participants in the media they watched.

Of course, the internet went in a different direction. The rise of #dotcons pulled people into walled gardens where visibility was dictated by algorithms, engagement was hijacked by ads, and “independent creators” had to play the platform game or disappear. VisionOnTV stood against that tide, but history didn’t side with us.

Yet, the need for a project like VisionOnTV has never gone away. The corporate grip on media is suffocating, activist voices are still being marginalized, and the fight for an open, people-powered internet continues. Maybe it’s time to dig through the compost of the past and see what new seeds we can plant.

What do you remember about VisionOnTV? And what lessons should we carry forward into today’s decentralized media struggles?

@chpietsch @nichtich @hvdsomp I think the joke is on the programmable vs. legal definition of "accessible". You might have a license for some "FAIR" data, but if it's with one of the major publishers it's unusable anyway. Whereas with #bittorrent everything is much easier. Everyone is resigned to this as the supposedly "transformative" agreements have failed to make publishers more open, so access equals SciHub/AnnasArchive for the unwashed masses.

QUESTION
does anybody have any tips on how to deal with stalled #bittorrent downloads from @internetarchive? these are all public domain movies from the 1910s, 20s and 30s and they stop 99.5 or 99.9%. some seem to be complete at 99.9% but most don’t work.

bittorrent can be very frustrating like that. i force checkout and download and nothing happens.

I can't believe more people don't torrent, considering how expensive and numerous subscriptions have become. The bar for feeling like a badass among the normies should not be this low.
