Great pic! I had no idea how slender their bills were?!

For anyone who's never seen them in action, I took this short video on St. Pete Beach in 2020...

Black Skimmer’s Flight

Here is a black skimmer () flying above water at Gulfport, Mississippi.

"The distinctive Black Skimmer has many folk names in North America, where it has been called scissor-bill, shearwater, seadog, flood gull, stormgull, razorbill, and cutwater." - allaboutbird.org

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

Take a look:

Skimmers will skim.

Here's another photo of a black skimmer (Rynchops niger) skimming along the shallow for food. The bird looks like it doesn't have eyes, but a closer look reveals a black eye among the black feathers. It makes me think a bit about blind creatures in a sci-fi movie who hunt by sound.

"Although the Black Skimmer is active throughout the day, it is largely crepuscular (active in the dawn and dusk) and even nocturnal. Its use of touch to catch fish lets it be successful in low light or darkness." - allaboutbirds.org

All together now.

I wanted to show you these black skimmers (Rynchops niger) gathering on the beach., particularly for those of you who haven't seen this before - I know I hadn't. This photograph just shows a fraction of the birds in this group, and there were several groups on the beach. I've already posted a couple photos of these birds and am sure to post more. I find them fascinating.

"Possibly the best description of the Black Skimmer's bounding, head-down foraging style came from the great seabird biologist R. C. Murphy in 1936. He said they look like “unworldly… aerial beagles hot on the scent of aerial rabbits.”" - allaboutbirds.org

Good evening, 🌊🌊🌊

25 November 2023

I didn't have time to say good morning, this morning. We're on our way home. I decided to stop half way and spend the night on the beach again. I had enough points for a free night so, why not. Besides driving is pretty tedious even though I'll almost always be listening to a book. This trip, I didn't get around to buying a new audio book so we're relistening to one of the Jack Reacher stories by Lee Childs. The book is "The Hard Way" read by Dick Hill who is my favorite Reacher voice. The latest book are read by Scott Brick one of my favorite book narrators, but I think Dick Hill's deep voice is attached to Reacher, at least for me.

“No, I'm a man with a rule. People leave me alone, I leave them alone. If they don't, I don't.”

Time to go ...

Here are some more black skimmers (Rynchops niger) along with a few gulls or terns. I haven't yet identified the gull species yet, but I'll get around to it when I have time.

The mixed flocks were some of the most fun, but certainly made identifying new birds tougher. Good practice at estimating bird counts though!
