Measurements from stations around the world show that #methane levels have increased significantly since the early 2000s.
According to the report, the main reason is that more methane has been released from wetland areas such as #bogs, shallow #wells , #ponds, and #lakes in tropical regions.
And as it gets warmer, more is released.
“The temperature change leads to increased microbiological activity,” researcher Stephen Matthew Platt says. He is one of the researchers behind the new study.
Processes like #decomposition in wetlands happen faster when it gets warmer.
Another reason for the increase in methane emissions is that #permafrost has begun to #thaw in the north.
“When the permafrost thaws, it also leads to more water on the surface, and this development is underway,” explains Platt.

The end of the line, Bord Na Mona are currently lifting all the old industrial railway tracks they used to take peat or turf sods off the bog. This is mainly because they are unused but also to prepare for the construction of the massive Balleydermot wind farm which is currently in the planning stages. They will leave behind some great infrastructure which hopefully will be used for long distance off road cycling/walking tracks, the road crossings are all there. #cycling #bogs #railways

This one is *S. purpurea*, or mostly so. I used to some horticultural hybrids with Southeastern species, but they've died out.
I made these up in 2012 in a workshop at a nursery that, at the time, at least, specialized in bog plants, among other native plants. I've added to them over the years.
