Description of a minor climbing injury

They say "slab is rehab" but that's obviously not true if you bang your face onto a volume on your way down. :oof:

If you know me for a while, you've heard me complaining about finger strength. I do it less nowadays, not just because I got stronger (somewhat), but also because of a strong influence from my past "bouldering bro" peers ("what strength bro it's all technique bro"). So I shut up and blamed myself, essentially.

Now I'm watching Emil Abrahamsson on YouTube (highly recommend), and I've just had a huge revelation moment.

Despite yet another headache*, I started the day with a #bouldering session that I'm actually quite happy with.

* I've now started tracking both the headaches and the vertigo vs possible triggers as I'm suspecting vestibular migraines, and will try to get an appointment with a neurologist soon. No need to worry.

Outdoor Abruzzo

Abruzzo is better known for its alpine climbs in the Gran Sasso massif, and the numerous limestone sport crags spread all over its provinces, but is now also home of one of the hardest boulder problems in the world: The Big Slamm 9a/V17.

The boulder has been climbed by Elias Iagnemma at the beginning of 2025, after 35 attempts by this strong professional climber from L’Aquila, who is also […]

This video was supposed to be about failure as an inevitable part of progress. Even though I love slab climbing (yeah, go call me a weirdo), this route in the 7a-7c range seemed impossible.

Start with trusting a no-texture "volcano", then a tiny foothold, then another while also crossing your legs, then an even smaller and shallower one a lightyear away and on a no-texture volume. Then your sweaty hands hold a razor-sharp crimp while propelling you up.

Routes I like: wide movements, a bit of balance, a bit of power but little finger strength involved. My lower back did not enjoy the finish at all. Difficulty 7/9 (somewhere 6c-7a).

Went #bouldering this morning!

My body and head are starting to feel more collaborative again, so I hope I can get back to my former rhythm of twice per week. So far this year I only managed to do one session per week, if at all, which was frustrating AF.

After work, work and work, finally found the time (and energy) to go for my first bike ride of the year. Had to pass out cheap sunglasses along the ride to the public to protect them from my dazzling white legs. While riding uphill some walking ducks overtook me by surprise. The very nice spring sun felt like a scorching heatwave. Passed the large local boulder with people enjoy the climbing and weather.

To speak with a famous Dutch presenter known for his modesty: it was unanimously a ludicrously large success.

After a forced break last week due to my chronic vertigo, I went #bouldering again this morning. Not totally happy with my fitness level, but I managed to top a route (pictured) I so far hadn't been able to 💪

Today was a high gravity day for me 😆 Still, managed to send a few of interesting routes.

The red one transitions from a very powerful and technical first half into an easier but rather delicate finish.

You can probably see that I'm quite tired, going into the second hour of the session (and repeating this boulder for the recording).

Went #bouldering this morning and finally topped the fb5 route I'd been trying my hands on for a while. The trick was to do it more towards the start of the session when I still had strength left 😅

The stars also aligned and all four of us were there today! 😊
