@smitjo
Thanks John. It was a good segment. While there was no new information in what was presented, it all needed repeating because only through repetition will people start to get it and perhaps call for urgent intervention to right the wrongs (this is of course not limited the the issues being faced by the #TertiarySector ). There are a lot of issues vying for public attention, but it shouldn’t be beyond our capacity to look at them all and demand actions from those with the authority to act, stirr them awake to their responsibilities beyond mere electoral prospecting.

My washing machine is making an awful noise during the last spin cycle, like it’s going to explode. It’s about 3/4 years old, cover ended.
Is this something I can sort with help from YouTube? Or should I get someone to look at it? TIA
Looking for a new BlueTooth Headset
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2010/07/looking-for-a-new-bluetooth-headset/
It turns out that my washing machine is incompatible with my BlueTooth headset. What was once my favourite little gizmo - resplendent with blinking lights - is now little more than scrap metal. Arse.
Dead BT3030
The Jabra BT3030 was, without a doubt, the best BlueTooth headset I ever had. There were regular firmware updates for it. Sound and call quality were excellent. It could pair with two devices simultaneously - and automagically pause the music on one if you received a call on the other. Best of all, it had standard sockets. A 3.5mm jack so I could use my own headphones - and a micro-USB socket so I could charge it from the same cable as my phone.
Well. It's now dead. My circumstances have changed, so I need to buy a replacement. Requirements are...
Micro-USB charger. All phones are standardising on micro-USB - and I don't want to carry around two different charging cables for my devices.
Stereo. I don't want a twat-earring - I want to listen to music.
Control of music and calls.
Pocket sized. When I'm not using it, I want to be able to store it conveniently and discretely.
What I don't need...
I'm not a snake-oil buyer audiophile - I don't need ear-phones that cost more than a tenner.
Doesn't need to be BlueTooth 4.0 - or even 3.0. I'm taking it as read that it will be BlueTooth 2.1 compatible. It would be nice if there were firmware upgrades available.
Doesn't need military grade noise cancellation technology. I'm usually sat in an office or a park - not a war zone.
Waterproof. I've learned my lesson!
So, what's out there that you would recommend.

Terence Eden’s BlogFun fact about neckties: They're not for fashion, ties hide how hot the studio is without AC in the summer. Let's add a suit to that shirt and tie! It's 90° inside & 90° outside on Saturday in Billings. I'll have your hot weather forecast at 5:30 & 10!

The Guardian describes the process of getting #published in #sciece #journals as #broken: In 2020 alone, #academics globally spent >100 million hours #PeerReviewing journal papers. I'll bloody say there's a "Significant delay" on Line 5 / the Eglinton Crosstown line.
Despite the line not being open (and unlikely to open for months) the service status monitors update frequently with completely made-up travel information. This one's at the Kennedy terminus at the east end. The stations along Eglinton E are showing fictitious arrival times, too (except where the LCDs are glitched out and broken).

United StatesOh my $DEITY, the "AI" #slop problem...
I do #hobby #electronics. I ran into a problem that I was having difficulty figuring out from the IC manufacturer's datasheet (which is terse, but does contain several example uses / circuits). It felt like I was missing something fundamental about the way it worked, so I searched the web for 3rd-party documentation, tips, tricks, examples of use, etc.
And I got pages and pages and pages of results that were nothing but slop.
Language clearly stolen from the official datasheet and reworded by #AI into not making sense.
Articles that repeat the same point in multiple sentences in multiple sequential paragraphs.
Descriptions that refer to numbered components that do not appear on the shown schematic.
Descriptions of the working of the component that are incredibly obviously incorrect, to the point that anyone who's ever measured the voltage drop across a resistor would say "That can't be right".
Confident declarations of the function of many of the device's (numerous) control pins, which are not only wrong, but sometimes completely the opposite of reality. To the point that if you followed the given instructions, you would very quickly release the #magic #smoke and become sad.
Out of the first ~60 #search results, I saw 2 that were actual humans communicating. And neither of them had a solution, they were only semi-related.
The #web is #broken. Thanks, #SiliconValley #techbros.
