Seriously, learning #CAD is the motherfucking olympics of frustration 🤬 just spent almost two hours getting literally nowhere... I can't believe I'm doing this of my own free will 😂

Wanna know how bad it is? If you search for "user friendly CAD" you don't even get AI slop results - or, to put it differently, even the machines we built specifically for lying to us aren't bold enough to claim that such a thing exists.

You know what I love? When somebody does a tutorial about something, then talking at nearly infinite length about stuff that isn't that thing while absolutely SPRINTING! past said thing that the tutorial is ostensibly about at Mach 3.5...

In the #ttrpg design community, there are regular questions about what to use for #book #layout. And the usual suspects are, of course, InDesign and Affinity Publisher. Logical! Buuut... Why not #Rhinoceros or some other #CAD program?

Dear #AskFedi,

Would someone like to design me a cursed PCIe bracket adapter for 3D print?
I need to fit a card upside down (in relation to the connector).

Context: mastodon.social/@dzwiedziu/114

Edit: the cables probably won't fit.

Oh-kaaaaay, that's going to have to wait until I have a shit-ton of time I don't know what to do with...

In trying to learn a little #CAD drawing I'm constantly confronted with the fact that my mind works in physical space, not geometric/mathematical, which is why I'm so partial to SketchUp - my brain doesn't know how to even begin working in a space where there's no reference to the real world.

It's like putting me blindfolded in zero-G & asking which way is up.

I think the moral of the story is vinyl cutters make mediocre pen plotters and Inkscape isn’t a great tool for HPGL.
At some point in the process one of them shits the bed and and draws a line right through the drawing.
Dashed lines also don’t work; I _think_ HPGL has a line type description feature, so maybe it’s the plotter just not accepting it.
On the plus side, I (sort of) finally got HPGL out of OSX Inkscape by rolling back to v1.3.

I wish I could buy a legit copy of AutoCAD R14 or 2000. That’s all I’d really need for this.

A patron asked our makerspace to design and CNC mill a replica of the Gemeente-Energiebedrijf sign found all over Amsterdam. They brought us a screenshot of a stock photo and some 6mm thick aluminum to cut it out from. Here's a first rough draft, CAD/CAM in #FreeCAD and milled in a #Snapmaker Artisan. I'm a novice at this stuff, you can probably tell from the results lol, but the next one will (hopefully) be better!

Here's a #craft work in progress. #cad drawing in #qcad of an #islamic tile pattern. Engraved that into a piece of plywood with a #lasercut machine. The dark spots are burnt away to a depth of ca. 1.5 mm. I pressed a prepared sheet of clay onto the form and got this pattern. Next step is glazing. Now I know this works, I have lots of ideas.

I designed a single-piece 3D printable Arca-Swiss quick-release clamp. Compliant mechanisms are so satisfying.

Made with FreeCAD. Download the model and customize it to your needs: printables.com/model/1258735-c

It might be Cardboard Aided Design #CAD I am undertaking, but I'm using my @FreeCAD pencil and a protractor I drew myself in @inkscape and lasercut so I still get tech points! #making #opensource

After years, we’re still revisiting a new #GSoC proposal to implement #NURBS functions in #Blender, another ambitious project. I’m skeptical: wouldn’t it be better to leverage existing tools like FreeCAD’s #OCCT kernel and wrappers such as PythonOCC, which already provide ready-to-use solutions? A native implementation would require advanced mathematical and programming expertise, which a beginner (still learning C++) would struggle to master in just a few weeks of development. #b3d #CAD

Just out of curiosity, what kind of workflows do you #freecad or other CAD package users have for simple stuff you need to model for 3D printing or CNC'ing?

I start with a crude Post-It note version and try to get all the measurements in that phase, so when I get to the good part, I can just keep on drawing without killing the flow.

Does anyone know of a Opensource project that is likely to be a replacement for AutoCAD for the building/MEP industries? The only two that I know of are FreeCAD and LibreCAD. FreeCAD is parametric, and LibreCAD is still way too "new".

The only features they tout are: Free, GPLv2 OpenSource, "No Language Barriers"

librecad.org/#features

And there is no roadmap.
