One brief note: when David says the "new way" is to use Python virtual environments, that's extremely relative. It has been best practice (and the only way to save your sanity because of dependency hell in any nontrivial project) in the Python community for, I dunno, 20 years? But Python's been around for >30, so it is the "new" way. Long before the `virtualenv` tool I was accomplishing the same thing with symlink trees to isolate interpreters.

There are lots of opinions on where you should keep your venvs, i.e. what the path to them should be. I personally like putting them in the project directory, typically `<project>/.venv`, but others like to stash them away someplace, like in ~/.local/share. Project tools that handle virtualenv management (e.g. poetry, uv, etc) will generally give you a way to control where they create the venvs.

Why do systems fail us ? + The Answers (=Better social systems and #Friendships)

Updating and Writing copies of this now just to get some feedback. @freemo you will get a shorter version and hopefully benefit from revision so can skip this for now.

(everyone else feel free to comment and I'll keep it in mind and for later revisions today)...

QUESTION THAT HINT TO MY DIRECTION...

❓ Just more "users" ? or Better social systems and #Friendships for the better way,.,?

❓ Why do systems fail us ?

❓ Why do people not improve / become #circular / #frustrated?

Short version answers as list and description below:

🔴 ANSWERS / THE LIST

➡️ 1. Better human social systems = better human #friendships

➡️ 2. Machine Systems themselves provide access to #1 but can't actually do it (at all) which is why social practise is needed

➡️ 3. Machine Systems use coincidence more often (#hashtags, #algorithms, not much else) and expect users to know how to *actually* communicate beyond 'nice cat' comments and "nice car" pictures'. This is the void or potential that needs work.

➡️ 4. People need to grow their brains and ability to moderate feelings internally (systems do not do that) to become better people - not just users which might 'at some point' get it and bumble along saying it's no fault of their own (which is true if others are not actively helping

➡️ 5. Humanity needs human work, not just machines.

Better social systems = better #friendships

LONGER / EXPLAINED VERSION

➡️ DESCRIPTION / THE NEXT LEVEL AFTER VANILLA INSTALL

This might be seen as "The Next Level" model beyond just logging in to a communication #platform or #installing a :mastodon: server - because it actually involves the individuals doing more of the work between them, and then finding / accepting others in turn... like a kind of tuning or solving of own missing pieces. 🧩 if you agree that as individuals we are like unique copies and similarities of each other while also sharing the same world so there is a lot in common (and rightly should be).

Rolling the dice more often with people creatively and otherwise 🎲 but not just as weirdos contacting each other - a better system or way on top.

For those that really don't want of course that's fine, step aside, BUT also for those that want / need encouragement and have some direction and feelings in life... Let us all process it.

Nobody wants to be alone and I agree nobody wants to be a shoulder to cry on all the time - but it needs something in the middle and not just being increasingly alone (again my opinion but is measurable but modern capitalistic systems and profit-orientated ways that CUT OUT the humans parts and even replace it with machines).

What seems to work is actual non-demanding friendship or a sliding scale so that the doors are not totally closed or totally open either... and that middle opens up a whole new world (as friends local and afar gather and from mass turn into a better human unit).

100% the one-way social is not enough so something for everyone need to be there, not starting from extremes but not stopping after giving another messaging device... stepping towards the extreme as a nicer "program of bettering the brain more often" / re-education / enjoyment of our own selves- improving on many levels of contact all the while.

🔴 Any thoughts ?
THAT'S THE MAIN TEXT so reply to add your opinion please... the rest is just expanding on that

🔴 YOUTUBE AS EXAMPLE
We have youtube but we don't really have contact with those great people. So we can see ourselves in the same dynamic while not needing to be a big hollywood star and being more accessible.

Youtube is great (apart from being google etc) but the one-way video stuff gets to you after a while as you see you're just a user... but a more together youtube contact where people are able to see and acknowledge you on a more neutral / less advertising space like Mastodon is also essential beyond just watching. Even work with them! This is perhaps the ultimate goal for every artist or educator and while it's "God not all at once" you do need to link people in else just have empty gallery or just tourists who barely use your work or remember you.

====================
🔴 USERS JUST KILLING TIME WITHOUT PARENTS / TEACHERS / EDUCATORS / ETC

So to make sure as 'users' were are not just killing time (from nothing else to do) we seem to need more relativity with others.
Yes some / all of us can use it to kill time nicely but often it's from nothing else to do (which can be bad)

It's like relying on tech while people stay the same less-skilled levels and less-confident online to actually build trust or measures things better.
Essentially need teaching and regular related examples.

Not investing in people themselves (and more tech) basically means we need a better balance between us than just being given a social messaging system ... or it's the natural next level after we have #Mastodon etc

Encouraging closer social relativity... Growing people essentially (not expecting any outside system to do it but us ourselves).

Improving human relationship seems to be the #1 solution to many things which externally / outside are more conditional and as ultimatums to connecting so not quite able to be honest (it's #money or #conditions first). To make sure we are not just "users" of any system... we need to see and practise more ourselves #neutrally / #expressively.

Talking together more often might not be for everyone BUT as system makers it's not only about giving people a system and leaving them to and expecting less #cordinated stuff to work (for those that want / can see others doing it and benefits).

It's like giving a child a new phone and expecting them to use it properly. Adults are still fairly new to online and technology even in the basic text sense we've had for a while.

If 'systems' by themselves only help interact and don't solve actually interacting past one-way messages then everything people can do online or offline can fail to connect properly if actually they don't practise making friends more often or going beyond just monetary exchange (needing to have a job and #friends / #colleagues lost after #jobs

🔴 GOALS (without sounding to inhuman about this independent #project)

➡️ responsibility for each of us to increase user-to-user interaction on networks
➡️ match-making ourselves in that sense
➡️ encouraging closer social relativity... growing people essentially (not just code, machines, more systems without our own invested work / only mainstreams stuff to share with others)

A #Circular #Economy is a system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources.

Unlike the traditional linear economy (take, make, dispose), the circular economy keeps resources in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them while in use.

Hello #Design people, I need your help! There is a lot of writing about the #regenerative #design which is all very positive, and I wonder if anyone is aware of any critique of it. After many years going from #sustainable, #systemic, #circular and probably many others I long forgot, I am very skeptical when the design crowds all jump on the next [insert buzzword] design bandwagon.
If you are aware of any writing questioning regenerative design (no climate denials), link it below!

Many innovations are radical on their own. By not offering fully livable alternatives to the status quo, innovative work remains piecemeal.

It’s time to coordinate our abilities. #MakeinPlace proposes a global challenge to explore how #sustainable practices could support each other in #regenerative #circular systems. The Make in Place #Design Challenge seeks resources and incentives to #support participants.

Bacteria helping to extract rare metals from old batteries in boost for green tech

Scientists have formed an unusual new alliance in their fight against climate change -- 🔥They are using bacteria to help them extract rare metals vital in the development of green technology.

🆘 Without the help of these microbes, we could run out of raw materials to build turbines, electric cars and solar panels, they say.

The work is being spearheaded by scientists at the University of Edinburgh and aims to
👉 use bacteria that can extract lithium, cobalt, manganese and other minerals from old batteries and discarded electronic equipment. 👈

These scarce and expensive metals are vital for making electric cars and other devices upon which green technology devices depend -- a point stressed by Professor Louise Horsfall, chair of sustainable biotechnology at Edinburgh.

“If we are going to end our dependence on petrochemicals and rely on electricity for our heating, transport and power, then ⭐️we will become more and more dependent on metals,” said Horsfall.
“All those photovoltaics, drones, 3D printing machines, hydrogen fuel cells, wind turbines and motors for electric cars require metals – many of them rare – that are key to their operations.”

♦️Politics is also an issue, scientists warn.
#China controls not only the main supplies of rare earth elements, but dominates the processing of them as well.
“To get around these problems we need to develop a #circular #economy where we #reuse these minerals wherever possible, otherwise we will run out of materials very quickly,” said Horsfall.
⚠️“There is only a finite amount of these metals on Earth and we can no longer afford to throw them away as waste as we do now. We need new #recycling technologies if we want to do something about global warming.”

And the key to this recycling was the microbe, said Horsfall.
#Bacteria are wonderful, little crazy things that can carry out some weird and wonderful processes. Some bacteria can synthesise nanoparticles of metals, for example. We believe they do this as a detoxification process. Basically they latch on metal atoms and then they spit them out as nanoparticles so that they are not poisoned by them.”
✅ Using such strains of bacteria, Horsfall and her team have now taken waste from electronic batteries and cars, dissolved it and then used bacteria to latch on to specific metals in the waste and deposit these as solid chemicals.

“First we did it with #manganese. Later we did it with #nickel and #lithium. And then we used a different strain of bacteria and we were able to extract #cobalt and nickel.”
