The Coding Language Caught in DOGE's Crosshairs
@clive speaks to Brooke Gladstone about #COBOL and manages to touch upon the gendered roles of coding and tag #GraceHopper and #FlowMatic on his way to explaining why “modernizing” old code on this scale cannot be done in a few months, why old code works well, and why #AI won’t necessarily help them do it well. #OnTheMedia

What's the deal with "tech" industry, aren't there other industries? Is it because it is the only industry left in EU/UK/US while manufacturing has moved? Or because it is fashionable more profitable?
Because it pays well at the moment? So did #cobol programming and stick welding

Mind blown. You can run IBM #zos on a PC with a personal edition license.

And it has IBM #COBOL inside it. I don't understand why this was so hard for me to find. Looks like I need a new machine (linux host, 1tb drive space and then enough oomph to run a VM)

hackernoon.comJust watched an #IBMZDay session about the #COBOL Upgrade Advisor for z/OS (CUAZ), and it reminded me that the feelings people have about COBOL being old are so weird.
There are new Enterprise COBOL compilers being released on a regular basis, with new features. And new (first released in 2021, and continually improving) tools like CUAZ to help with upgrades!
Oh, and COBOL is still really good at what it does.

Doge mucking up SSA software p2
The fact that a once reliable website now regularly crashes also indicates that these Doge techies don't really understand the basics of website configuration and server needs. I feel sorry for anyone who is not already on Social Security. Trying to start your benefits now sounds like it will be very rough.

Doge mucking up SSA software
This is certainly disheartening. I was extremely concerned about Doge trying to modify or rewriting COBOL software. AI isn't going to be much help because bugs will arise and AI, which created the bug, will not be able to fix it without knowledgeable assistance. I don't think COBOL has been taught in decades.

Oh, and I checked - #COBOL developers don’t actually get paid super highly
Banks and Social Security are not using #COBOL because it’s so great, but because it’s so hard to migrate to something else.
They should and do migrate away … very slowly and carefully.
(I‘m in banking.)
I don’t dislike COBOL. I program daily in #ABAP, which looks like a COBOL dialect. I don’t mind verbosity, verbosity increases readability and debuggability. No devs? Train some. But COBOL developers tell me it has serious limitations. It’s just old.

I worked on the Developer Journey which takes you through everything from technical sessions related to the latest #mainframe hardware to direct application of both open source and proprietary tooling that can help you develop code more effectively, and even a session around getting that #COBOL 6 compiler upgrade done (it has some really cool features)

A safe and proper rewrite should take years not months.
The project organized by #Musk lieutenant #SteveDavis, multiple sources who were not given permission to talktell WIRED, and aims to migrate all #SSA systems off #COBOL, one of the first common business-oriented programming languages, and onto a more modern replacement like #Java within a scheduled tight timeframe of a few months.
