Bonus #artAdventCalendar: Happy birthday to #mathematician & #computerscientist US Navy rear admiral Grace Hopper (1906-1992) who popularized the revolutionary idea of developing machine-independent programming languages based on English.

She began teaching at Vassar in 31 & got PhD (Yale) in 34. She found marriage & teaching less fulfilling & tried to enlist in the Navy, but was rejected then got a special exemption to volunteer for 🧵1/n

As a #ComputerScientist, many times I wish I were a REAL #scientist.
As a #SoftwareEngineer, many times I wish I were a REAL #engineer.

How a stubborn #computerscientist accidentally launched the #deeplearning boom
"You’ve taken this idea way too far," a mentor told Prof. Fei-Fei Li, who was creating a new image #dataset that would be far larger than any that had come before: 14 million images, each labeled with one of nearly 22,000 categories. Then in 2012, a team from Univ of Toronto trained a #neura network on #ImageNet, achieving unprecedented performance in image recognition, dubbed #AlexNet.

The former #IBM and #XerosPAC #engineer reportedly #passedaway in her #home in #Jackson, #Michigan on Sunday (10 June) following #complications due to a #heartcondition, according to her #husband, #CharlesRogers. “I was by her side the entire time, and was holding her hand when she passed,” he said in the statement. “I don’t know what I will do without the love of my life.”

Our latest episode "Brains, Drones and Smart Apps For Our Phones" is finally out! 2scientists.org/podcast/drone

A year since our last release, and longer since we spoke with Marvin Andujar, a #ComputerScientist, who is working on all the things we can control with out brains. both for fun, and a way to increase #accessibility and improve #MentalHealth.

Thanks to The Easy Button for use of their track “She doesn’t live there anymore”.

Hello! #introductions
I'm a #ComputationalBiologist (1st #biochemist, then #ComputerScientist). I'm faculty at UConn Health. I'm interested in many scientific areas such as #SystemsBiology, #ComputationalModeling and #Simulation, #IronMetabolism, #NonlinearDynamics, #SoftwareDevelopment. I'm one of the authors of the @copasi simulation software and its predecessor Gepasi (thus my handle). I care about #OpenAccess & #OpenSource. I am also interested in #photography, #Linux, and #EVs.

One of the downsides of being an independent #consultant in #IT is that one is obliged to submit to #interviews, frequently.

Many years ago, when dot-com erupted, I was asked by a long-time friend to help out a start-up that he was mentoring. I was interviewed by his mentee, a twenty-one-year-old CTO. Young C-level executives were quite common in those days, and so was the mentorship arrangements like that of my friend's.

After the usual pleasantries, the CTO asked, "So, what are your 'superpowers' as a #developer?"

I answered, "I'm not a developer; I'm a #ComputerScientist." He shot me a confused look. To break a long, awkward silence that followed, I proceeded by saying, "My strongest 'superpower', I suppose, is my ability to realise that I possess no superpowers."

I didn't get that gig—fortunately.

Jew Of the Day

✡️ Today's Jew of the Day is John McCarthy!

John McCarthy was a computer scientist, the creator of the Lisp family of languages, and one of the founders of artificial intelligence. McCarthy's contributions to computer science are vast and include fundamental ideas around how we use computers today. In the late 1950s, his discoveries around recursion, symbolic computing and lambda calculus lead to the LISP, as well as logic programming.

While working on Lisp, he pioneered the invention of automatic memory management and garbage collection, and later pioneered time-sharing- which is fundamental to multitasking. He helped found the MIT "Project MAC" as well as the Standford AI Lab.

McCarthy won many awards in his life, including the Turing Award, the Kyoto Prize, the National Medal of Science, and the Benjamin Franklin Metal.

.> Strand a computer scientist at an airport, and the poor soul would probably survive for days with only a network-connected computer and five applications: an e-mail client, a web browser, a general-purpose text editor, a typesetting system, and a slide-presentation application. More specifically, while most any mail client or browser would satisfy the stranded scientist, probably only Emacs or vi would do for editing, LATEX for typesetting, and Microsoft PowerPoint(TM) for preparing slides...

.> The typical business traveler would more likely insist on Microsoft Word TM for both text editing and typesetting. Computer scientists may prefer Emacs and LATEX because text editing has little to do with typesetting, and these different tasks are best handled by different, specialized applications. More importantly, though, tools such as Emacs, vi, and LATEX are programmable. Through the power of programming abstractions, a skilled user of these tools becomes even more efficient and effective...

.> Shockingly, many computer scientists give up the power of abstraction when faced with the task of preparing slides for a talk. PowerPoint is famously easy to learn and use, it produces results that are aesthetically pleasing to most audience members, and it enables users to produce generic slides in minutes. Like most GUI-/WYSIWYG-oriented applications, however, PowerPoint does not lend itself easily to extension and abstraction. PowerPoint provides certain pre-defined parameters—the background, the default font and color, etc.---but no ability to create new abstractions....

I'm sitting in on a class on
#MicroOrganisms #MicroOrganismBiology #微生物学 in Japanese. I started reworking the presentation slides into Racket slideshow. It's empowering! The time spent re-learning and learning Slideshow is also getting me to remember the biology. Going back to my 1988 Biology textbook I see that Whittaker's Five Kingdom classification scheme has been replaced by Woesse's Domains. But the basic chemistry with photosynthesis and glucose is the same..
