Day 8 - ancona ducklings
This one is from a few years ago. Every few years, we do hatch some of our eggs both to sell the ducklings as well as replenish our egg-laying flock. Those years provide some cute photo opportunities.
Day 7 - Cecilia-Camilia (CC), a cayuga duck
CC is one of the first batch of ducks we got. Her two sisters we got at the same time have already moved on. When they are young, cayugas are all black with some iridescent blue and green coloration at times. Just like many humans, ducks go gray over their lifetime, and you can see that in CC feathers here. CC definitely held onto her black and iridescent coloration for far longer than her sisters.

@Homestead. Quack to get out. Quack to get back in. Our Runner Ducks went out in the noon sun looking for sunny microclimates. Not finding anything warmer than 12 Fahrenheit (-11 Celsius) they hurry back to the building. It’s pleasant enough but the foraging is just freeze dried grasses. #ducksofmastodon, #minnesota.

How to annoy ducks in one easy step:
1. Take a walk on a trail that goes past a pond.
They were almost perfectly quiet as we approached. Once the humans were noticed, however, we were greeted with a series of annoyed quacks as the flock temporarily moved to the water.
(They moved back to their original area as soon as we walked far enough past them, though).
@compost. Our compost pile got attention this week. The mostly composted 2024 materials were shuffled to the left bay. The material looks good. Unfortunately the earthworm count was in the single digits. The fresh 2024 stems, vines, and such are going in the right bay. The lopper is leaning on the fence for chopping. The runner ducks check the pile a dozen times a day to help. We are fortunate. #compost, #compostodon, #gardening, #minnesota, #ducksofmastodon.
