The conference ended, and the guy about my age I’d been hanging out with talked to his coworkers about inviting me to come along to the homey old restaurant they were having dinner at. I gratefully accept their hospitality and transportation to and from, and the friendly dynamic of some tech geeks getting together at a dining establishment that would probably have been there to serve our grandparents. The guy across the table ordered a Samuel Adams.

There were a dozen of us on either side of that table, full of ideas and a love for the blossoming #electrical #engineering #technology that was getting designed and even manufactured across the country. For several more years, parts vendors wanted to be our friends, to get their special IC designed into the next special little box we dreamed up. It was circa 1999, the last best times.

Later we went to the Boston Aquarium. It was a great evening I’ll never forget, though I’ve long forgotten any of their names. But it was real and human and warm, and I’ll never get to experience anything quite like that again.

The reasons are many, but a few of them are (1) it’s 2025, not 1996, (2) we don’t make shit in this country anymore, and (3) #Covid

We had an emergency last night while cooking with our induction hob, when our battery box nearly caught fire as the interlink cables' connectors overheated and melted their insulation and burned into the tops of a couple of the batteries (not through to the inside though). I disconnected the batteries before the nasty smoke could turn to outright flames.

We finished our cooking on a camp fire.

We now have some new copper welding cable lugs on the 2AWG cables and power is back on.

We need some #Mutualaid to keep us out of overdraft trouble.

Anyone need some split core current transformers?

Up until about five years ago, I worked for an energy metering company. They did a warehouse cleanup and got rid of tons of material, including hundreds of CTs for AC current measurement. I snagged all of those (and used some for my own home metering) but I still have probably 200 floating around.

I've got split cores rated for 50A up to 6000A or so, and physical sizes from about 1/2" ID to 8" ID (the larger ones are flexible rope style). Mostly rated for 0-333mV AC output but there may be some oddballs in there (like 0-500mV, maybe a couple 4-20mA).

I need to clear up some space, so I was thinking $20 plus shipping per CT, maybe with a bulk discount if you get five or more? Some of these retail for $100+ so if I have something you need it could be a good deal! Most of these are lightly used in a testing environment.

So today is not going entirely to plan.
The set of additional #solarpanels I connected up refuse to give us juice. I tried to trace the fault and got jack shit info because my cheap ass 19 year old #multimeter is (confirmed by many tests now) not working any more. Its fuse is fine too, as is its #battery. It just displays zeros.
So add to the list of unexpected expenses and delays one new multimeter...

#mutualaid is our lifeline to #selfsufficiency so we can help others. Can you help us out with our expenses for...?

Multimeter: $7-8 at Harbor Freight
Crimp connectors: $?
Tyres: ~$1200 (Vulpibus)
Refilling fuel: ~$100
Refilling my overdraft: ~$500
Refilling my other overdraft: ~$250

$20 100 Ft 16 Gauge 3 Prong Woods Outdoor Extension Cord, Lawn & Garden, Orange

100ft is pretty far, you'll get some voltage drop over that range. 16ga is good for about 10amp load, about the max the biggest plug-in power tools will draw. Only idiots run 15A electric grills etc over that much cable.

You don't want to know how expensive outdoor 12ga 15amp cord is today, easily triple that price.

C.W. Smith
At the gym and trying to take in information on RV electrical systems. It's sort of the absolute most dangerous part of the Van build so I tend to keep looking at information trying to comprehend it.

For instance, I live in Texas. And if I want to be autonomous I need to have an Air Conditioning unit setup. Dad thinks knocking out a rear window and using a "Disposable" window unit is optimal. Because if it breaks you throw it out and get a whole new one...

Because repairing something that can be repaired costs money or something.

That particular AC unit, with no thermostat or energy saving controls at all runs about 500W on the box. Which to make it 8 hours still means battery. And since it has no actual thermostat, just cooling it doesn't stop and save power when it's cool enough.

So a 24v 100ah battery not counting DC to AC conversion and the power to run and inverter at 2400Wh would run it for 4 hours and change.

But I don't care for the setup and the disposability bit actually doesn't thrill me.

A 24V DC backpack mini however can use from 800 to 1000W. Which means that 2400Wh drops from 4 hours to 2 maybe.

I would prefer this method though because repair is preferred over disposal.

Just things like that work in my head.

I am planning my systems to be as efficient and autonomous as I can. Minimizing the DC to AC power conversion loss is part of it.
