So out of curiosity, in response to a post I saw from someone the other day, I checked and "#Gnome Web", also called "#Epiphany" has an option for mouse gestures. Just turned it on and tested it and sure enough a two finger swipe on my laptop trackpad goes back and forth between pages,
#Brave has an option for it and it's enabled but I can't seem to get it to work.
#Firefox has it enabled by default and it works fine.
Orange appears to be so close to figuring out what others have known for a couple decades.

www.youtube.comIt took me years… YEARS to figure out a reliable way to trigger the #GNOMEWeb / #WebKitGTK bug where the native general "Copy/Back/Forward/Reload" right-click menu would show up on top of GMail's custom contextual menus.
Finally I found a 100% surefire way to make it happen. Now it seems so straightforward, all of a sudden

#GNOME Web is truly independent from #Google. Though still dependent on #Apple, they don't have as much power as Google. It is still better than a Google monopoly. And #webkit is developed with proper APIs and meant to be embedded in other applications unlike Google's #blink.
One big feature missing is support for audio / video calls (webrtc). With #BoringSSL switching to Apache 2.0, a big blocker for webrtc support is resolved.
¡Salió @gnome 48! Y yo vuelvo a probar #Web.
I managed to enable web extension support in #epiphany with the following command:
$ gsettings set org.gnome.Epiphany.web:/org/gnome/epiphany/web/ enable-webextensions true
This allowed me to install ublock origin and redirector... but neither appear to work :{
Still, I'm mostly OK with the experience thus far.
Given all the mixed messages coming from @mozillaofficial about privacy, I've decided to give #gnome web (aka #epiphany) a shot...
It's pretty minimal, but I kinda like that. Only glaring issue is that it can't play YouTube videos :{
That and the lack of vi/vim navigation :|
I'll continue using it for a few days... maybe it will be good enough.
@darkbeth @davidrevoy hopefully we have to worry about that only a few years until independent engines become usable. #Verso and #Ladybird are candidates if #mozilla codebase rots. GNOME Web / #epiphany is another browser that has an engine not depending on Google (Apple webkit engine though, but at it it will be a real competition and even though they are bad to their own usets, they are not as powerful on the web like Google).
Mozilla Firefox is officially dead.
My back is officially turned.
What options remain?
For now I'm probably going to be using Gnome Web (i.e. Epiphany) for most straightforward web browsing. It works more than well enough for the stuff I do. Mobile version for Android? Does it exist? iOS?
I'll use Vivaldi for lame "modern" sites that a "simple" browser like Epiphany can't render properly. Mobile?
We'll see how far that goes. This may be less and less of an issue. The big player sites like Google, Meta, etc. are not somewhere I tend to visit.
Banking sites are a mixed bag of necessity.
I'm about to let my Amazon Prime account lapse on its yearly renewal since I won't use them any more.
At least Vivaldi seems to be a decent organization. Technology is based on Chromium though - and this is why I haven't started using it.
I will need to investigate Vivaldi's built-in adblocking since manifest v2 isn't a thing under Chromium.
I used to care about keeping the Mozilla rendering engine alive and relevant but now not so much.
The Firefox forks I've tried have been a mixed bag of whether their new versions follow re-enabling the privacy invasive things that Mozilla upstream does when it sends out a new version.
Time to leave them behind as well I guess.
A lot will depend on how much I miss ublock origin.
If there is a mass exodus from all the Firefox based forks then ublock may cease to exist.
There's a rant in there about pi-holing all browsers but I don't have it in me ATM.

Infosec ExchangeI am still tinkering with the #MangoPiQuad. I think I got a good understanding of #JWM and #Compton. Also had to play with a bunch of web browsers to see what works best and is fully functional (so that I can #toot); so far #Epiphany has worked the best on this low powered machine (but just barely ).
Been running Gnome 48 on Debian Trixie for the last day or so. I like it.
I'm also making a concerted effort to give Web (Epiphany) a solid try. In the last number of hours have not encountered any issues when using it to access Mastodon or Kijiji Autos. Just regular browsing normal sites seems to work fine.
I haven't accessed any terrible banking sites or anything like that yet. I half expect to have to keep Floorp around for that bull-roar.
Weirdly, with Web, the the scrolling and rendering on my 'big' workstation (11700k, RTX4070) is kind of rough compared to my laptop which seems really smooth and snappy (10750H, GTX1650). Both are on Wayland. Both are UHD screen (lappy is UHD+ 16:10 actually).
