I've overhauled the Apple II ebook for Overscan. I figured out how to insert DOS instructions into BASIC programs, so all the parts of the book can flow together seamlessly.

I will be discussing the making of this ebook at #init-hello on July 27 in Baltimore.

But, what makes me particularly proud and happy - with all the thinking over the last few days about what to do with Linux, returning to Fedora was never an issue! In the end, it was a decision between Debian and Arch, two distributions that couldn't be more different. But I opted for stability over up-to-dateness. Better safe than sorry.

Okay, I give up. After several weeks with Linux Mint, I made the switch to Debian Stable today.

Why now in the end?

Although I managed to overcome all the initial difficulties of switching to Mint, I just have my problems with this distribution... not that it's bad, not at all, but it just doesn't suit me.

In the end, Mint is a great distribution for newcomers and those switching from Windows. But I've been working with computers for over 42 years, learned SSP and Unix in the 1980s and have been using Linux - also privately - since the mid-1990s, worked in IT as an admin etc.. So I just don't feel at home using Mint, except for the beginning there is no challenge. And yes, admittedly, the image as a “newbie distro” doesn't meet my expectations either. You can judge me for this arrogant attitude for all I care.

And I just don't like Cinnamon. I just don't like him, period. No matter how much I pimp and polish it. I missed the raw power, the edginess of Gnome. Sure, I could have installed it on Mint, but I follow the philosophy of only using what is natively provided and intended in a distribution.

With Debian, everything now runs perfectly out of the box, just as I want it to. Without a problem. Awesome.

#Google arbitrarily messing around and removing well known #FOSS apps from #PlayStore seems to be peaking right now: First #Conversation had a fresh build being denied, now #Öffi has been entirely removed (not for the time) with no reason being disclosed.

That is why we desperately need usable and free #AppStore alternatives such as #FDroid, where we find most of our #FreeSoftware apps. Yes, I know it has security problems by design. But right now the alternatives fail when it comes to more important aspects:

#Obtainium is a good alternative for technophiles, who exactly know what they are looking for. #Accrescent might have good security standards regarding its architecture but the lack of app information, weird app listings (some including loads of trackers) and lack of basic usability features makes it very hard to recommend for the common user. And telling people to directly download of APKs is like randomly downloading EXEs on Windows. What could possibly go wrong?

Locked bootloaders, forced app stores, and vendor lock-in? No thanks!
