This past season foraged about 2 kg of #hazelnuts. Today did the float test to weed out the empty shells and the yield dropped down to a total of 20 nuts, which equates to about 3% success rate assuming they aren't empty.
Hazel blossoms and catkins. This is one that is the farthest behind. The other trees/bushes catkins are elongated and yellow now but not dropping any pollen.

Should see some pollen from the hazel trees in a week or so if it stays warm. The catkins are expanding fast. Last year there was pollen and bees gathering it for one day and then the wind blew about 50mph and no more pollen.

As a #PacificNorthwest / #PNW transplant, I often bemoan both the quantity and quality of citrus available. I truly miss it.
Last night we roasted fresh local #hazelnuts and added them into peanut butter cookies.
Today I picked up some apple pie from the baker made with remarkable local #apples that don't ship outside western Washington.
The #blueberries, marion berries, and #huckleberries this season have been extraordinary.
I'm sorry, I think I started on this about citrus...
Today's yield adds quite nicely to this year's total.
They are currently being dried on a metal tray.
Another fruitful yield from #foraging #hazelnuts.
Amazed that after sharing this image with friends who claimed that they are into foraging, that none of them knew what it is.
New blog post introducing the New York Tree Crops Alliance (NYTCA), a nut growers #cooperative I work for and with: https://www.nytca.org/s/stories/introducing-the-new-york-tree-crops-alliance-2
I share some details about who our farmers are, what we are doing, and why.

www.eurekalert.orgI saw lots of this pollen going into the hive.
The previous bees I had, caught from a huge swarm, that were in my top bar hive never stayed on the property when they were foraging. I literally would only see them coming and going from the hive.
I've never seen bees in these hazelnuts like this. You can hear the buzzing without even getting that close.
Hazelnut flowers, just a closeup.
The female flower is the little red speck on the bud to the right of the male catkins where the pollen comes from.

New project! I’ve been hired by the New York Tree Crops Alliance (NYTCA) to help their cooperative grow, process, and market hazelnuts and chestnuts.
This article describes several of the goals and aspirations of NYTCA and our partners:

I’ll also be providing products and services complementary to the needs and goals of NYTCA through my business (and NYS certified nursery), #FLXagroforestrysolutions
