Last week @HazelChu criticised the government for not doing anything to stop the ludicrous situation whereby we put tourists into houses and people who need houses into hotels.

But I guess there's more money to be made from the status quo.

The €6.7m that the government paid for the use of this Rathmines hotel over ten months works out at €8,600 per room per month. If you bought houses for those people you'd have got your money back in two years.

Why Warehousing Homeless People Doesn’t Work—And What Does

youtube.com/watch?v=dm-owfbKhr

If we want to end homelessness, we must fix the system meant to help—starting with our shelters. In this podcast episode, we speak with homeless service providers. They share how their organizations are breaking away from the outdated model of warehousing people and instead embracing low-barrier, housing-focused care.

A good news story
"While some planning applications elsewhere have been halted because the developers did not survey for bats or consider rare newts, this development has incorporated nature throughout, with bat boxes hanging from trees, and wetlands for newts directly next to the blocks of flats"

“One is left to wonder, why do parties of both major #political persuasions keep doing things which they know will put upward pressure on #house #prices, and thus exacerbate the #problem they say they are trying to solve?

It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that the reason is that they know there are only about 110,000 people who each year succeed in becoming first home buyers. And even if you assume that for every one who does, there are five or six who don’t, that’s still only 700,000 or so votes, tops, for policies that might restrain the rate of house price inflation or halt it altogether.

Politicians also know that at any point in time there are more than 11 million voters who own their own homes, and more than 2.25 million who own at least one investment property. The last thing those 11 million to 13 million voters want is anything that might restrain – let alone halt – the rate of property price #inflation.” — #SaulEslake

10s of 1,000s of stalled house building projects alone in his electorate? Don't believe.

Encourage extra 30,000 houses every year?

I think it's a rort to get money to mates.

Where are they getting all the money from? Good economic managers? Left country with nearly 1 trillion in debt, which #Labor has reduced.

Fuel excise cut not going to do much imho.

The cost-of-living crisis seeds were sown in the 10 years they in power.

Asheville Charlie

On my short drive to work there are two houses.

One of them is for sale and one of them is for rent. They've had signs in front of them for more than a month now.

Before #Helene these would have vanished before they could put the signs in the yard.

These are the real signs that #Asheville has lost some of its shine. I'm kind of 50/50 on this. We were thriving #tourist destination but the cost of everything especially #housing was (is) insane. Maybe just maybe it will come down to just nuts.

The UK has more self-storage units than any other country in Europe (although the per person levels may more similar?), which might imply:

as we become more packed into small (new) houses we need somewhere to put stuff when we form new households?

for those forced into a cycle of moves from rented home to rented home it offers some stability where one's belongings can reside... or

perhaps, seeking security in something we just hoard possessions?

At risk of stating the obvious.

The problem is not demand, the problem is supply.

#introduction

Hey #Mastodon. I didn't think I would be here for this but here I'm. We all know that world is not a good place to be alive but they don't let us leave either. Euthanasia is hidden behind government control...

Anyway, I'm about to be #homeless in 2 weeks and I need #help.

I'm 21 years old #Turkish #trans #girl. I need #housing and #money. Canadians know how messed up it's to live here and I can't live alone as an #immigrant.

I'm fine with #sex too. #Virgin not experienced.
