I remember reading about how French revolutionaries tried to replace the 7-day week with 10-days in the 1790s, but I never knew the Soviets tried something similar. Both wanted to move people away from religious activity on Sundays (among other goals).

From 1929-1940, industrial workers in the USSR had staggered 5-day work cycles. Four days on, one day off, with 20% of employees off on any given day, and the factories never shutting down. It was a big increase in leisure time (1/5 instead of 1/7) but schedules didn't usually match your family or friends so the time had less value.

The experiment was brought to an end by the Nazi invasion in 1940 when they shifted back to 7 day cycles.

I think that by now, Envoy Jillian Segal‘s report recommendations have been well and truly discounted — or ought to have been — and that in keeping with the #Labor govt’s MO it will simply be shelved without much time devoted to it. Still, until it is gathering dust in Parliament, it doesn’t do to remain silent. So, this quote from Bernadette Zaydan in Johnmenadue.com is worth posting, just so we’re on the same page here as it makes the case not as much for finding room in the archives shelves, but to dig a big whole and abandon that report to the worms of history — lesson learned, I trust.

“Australians were asked to vote on same-sex marriage. They were asked to vote on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. But on the question of whether speech critical of a foreign state should be criminalised, we are not asked. There is no referendum, no transparency and no democratic process. Under what constitutional authority or other legal authority is Segal acting?

Her proposals would expand powers over universities, workplaces and digital platforms, coercing institutions into adopting an unchallenged definition of antisemitism that has been condemned by the very experts who authored it.”
