🧵 Guide for new fedi users (brief-ish)

Hashtags are sometimes used for discovery. Not everyone uses them, but if you do use them #please dont #useThem like #this. Just put them at the end of the post.

You can also follow hashtags with the button shown in the screenshot attached.

#use #hashtags #likeThis

@NefariousAryq The way they display on the first image is due to two different things from what I recall:
- You're reading from a recent version of Mastodon (can't find the exact version right now, sorry)
- The hashtags must be written at the end of the message, separated from the rest by a blank line.

@forteller @chrismessina it’s a nice idea but in terms of formatting my preference would be a # at the end #LikeThis# (rather than using two different characters)

Toby

@stux (hopefully) quick question.

When setting a featured hashtag I write them #likeThis for accessibility and legibility reasons

Masto appears to normalise them #likethis

I'm guessing this is a software thing I should open a bug for, and not a per-instance thing?

@senanthic
I make a new line after the post to make it appear below.

* Füge Alt-Text / #Bildbeschreibungen hinzu,wenn du Medien postest.
* Schreibe den 1. Buchstaben von jedem Wort in einem #Hashtag groß: #LikeThis
[deutsches Beispiel #NeuHier ]

I keep seeing people emphasise the benefits of writing hashtags #LikeThis with capitalised words. Although it keeps being referred to as camel case, instead of pascal case. And I want to let them know, but it also seems pretty rude. 🙃

Apparently, there is a new #TwitterExodus wave.

In case you see this, new friend:

1. YOU are the algorithm. Follow, like, boost, and participate.
2. When uploading a picture, please add descriptive #AltText
3. Write hashtags with a capital letter for each word #LikeThis
4. Consider using the content warning feature more often than you would on other sites.
5. Don't be a dick.

Hi everyone! :ablobcatrainbow:

#MastodonTips

Capitalise the first letter of each word in hashtags #LikeThis

This makes hashtags able to be picked up by screen readers

@p_im_b Yes, captioning images is so helpful! I still forget sometimes. I have only been here a month, so I'm still learning too.

My other suggestion is to use camel case/initial caps in your hashtags. #LikeThis not #likethis . Again, it's easier on screenreaders. Also, be careful: there are very popular misspelled hashtags. For photography I've seen "photogaphy" and "photorgaphy" for instance.

To all the new folks: Welcome!

If you are adding #hashtags to your toots, and the hashtag has multiple words, be sure to capitalize each word #LikeThis. This supports our fellow Mastodonners that use #ScreenReaders. Also, be sure to add alt-text to any images you share.

Continue to #BeExcellentToEachOther! ❤️

Hello to all of you new folks. Here are some tips to help you out. These are mostly things I needed to learn when I started using the web interface on Mastodon. #Tips #Welcome #Intro

Local is for the instance ( instance / and the people you follow),

Home is for the ppl you follow and your DMs will show there too.

Federated is everything, everywhere, all at once (firehose, chaos, hard to read, interesting to watch).

Boost means you want to share content to your followers.

Favorites do not automatically boost the message, and generally exist to show the author that you appreciate what they've written.

You can add .rss to a person's profile, or to a hashtag, and generate a feed. However, lists can only include people that you follow. I've given up on lists, and use RSS for custom follows.

Hashtags are how you find things, there is no algorithm on here. So add hashtags to everything when it makes sense. Don't over do it though.

Full-text searching is a thing, but it doesn't always get you the results you need. Hashtags do.

Try and remember to use capital letters - #LikeThis - for each word in the hashtag. It helps screen readers.

Add images whenever you like, try and remember to add alt text to them, so everyone can experience them.

You can edit posts.

You can use content warnings to censor posts. Some people will demand that you do this, the choice is yours though.

You can mute certain words.

People can also bypass those muted words with v@riations of w*rds.

There are lots of groups, and shared interests. Use hashtags to find them.

Mastodon is what you make of it. Have fun, explore.

*** Friendly reminder that for accessibility (screen readers), it’s is a kindness to capitalize your hashtags #LikeThis. It’s also very cool to use alt text for images. Thanks!

Kitty (she/her)

@Mrfunkedude @w8in @SuitedUpDev Camel Case is also recommended, #LikeThis so that they indicate words.

I love that people care enough to share these things, and that people do them!

@JeriLRyan Capitalising the first letter of each word in a hashtag #LikeThis is useful for those using screen readers.

A gentle reminder to folks who are new to Mastodon. In solidarity with those in the disabled community who rely on screen readers, it may be helpful to:
- Add alt text/image descriptions when you post media
- Capitalize the first letter of every word in a hashtag #LikeThis
- Avoid emojis in your display name

MexicanYenta

Hi, welcome to Mastodon! A thing you might not know is that screen readers that vision impaired people use to read mastodon can’t read hashtags unless you capitalize each word. #LikeThis
