Maxwell's Cradle II Kit
Maxwell's Cradle II is A desktop toy that shows the power of magnetism. A steel ball runs on a slightly curved acrylic track, being given a small "kick" by the electromagnetic coil in the center.

Anyone have a recommendation for a cheap(ish) soldering iron? I'm looking for a small one that I can throw in my bag when I'm going to a repair cafe so I don't have to dismantle my desktop setup every time.
Moving instances is probably a good time for a re- #introduction

If you have ever dabbled in electronics, you probably have heard of the massive parts seller, Digikey. Now they're an example of how Trump's tariffs endanger American companies and American jobs.

#askfedi #maker I have a collection of #dolls and this is the first stand I’ve found that truly fits them well. Are there any #makers who could #3dprint or use #clay to make similar top pieces and round/oval bases for them? I also really like the metal part in the middle. How would I find such people? Thanks for any leads. #3dprinting #polymerclay #crafting
I wrote a similar blog post a few years ago. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one no longer fooled by #Etsy hype. Etsy is not a site for handmade goods anymore. It's a site for mass-produced, mostly imported crap. It is designed to squeeze every penny it possibly can out of the people who sell there. You can better support #artists and #makers by buying directly from them on their sites and not through Etsy.

Arduino BlogI make & sell dummy battery things since needing one in the lab myself. I conceived the little assembly of 3D printing and wire that lets you do in-situ current measurement or power injection in the tiny space where coin cells live.
Hobbyists, #makers, labs, #retrogaming and #retrocomputing nerds found them and send me orders which I grudgingly fill for a tiny fraction of minimum wage. The version shown here lets you relocate the battery outside a hard-to-access cabinet for easy changes.

The #GatherFiberSymposium got noticed by the local media! We were psyched that they invited our lace group in to their month of fiber art celebrations. There are a ton of great events going on.
More details from The Boston Globe (or search archive.youknow for an unpaywalled version).

ZoomacomTrying to resist binge watching Hannah Fry's Modern Devices show on BBC2 via iPlayer. I can highly recommend it if you are into taking things apart to see how they work.
Basically each episode she picks an appliance or thing (air fryer, smart card, fridge etc) and takes it apart and looks at the history and technology of the interesting parts.
