I’m not going to link to the NYT story but *of course* Therme lied about what properties they owned and what they operated. And Doug Ford surely knew about it because a bunch of his former staffers work there now. And they had to dumb down the site requirements because Therme didn’t meet them (I’m remembering this correctly, yes?). Doug Ford is corrupt through and through. #ONPoli

So how could this company — headquartered in Austria & running a single facility in Romania — persuade the #Ontario government that its business portfolio was far larger than it actually was?

The financial condition of the Therme Group, auditors would later conclude, “appeared weak.”

The company has yet to secure outside investment for its #Toronto project. But the #DougFord govt has been busy clearing land for #Therme on West Island.

Oh look, #DougFord's corrupt mega-spa deal has made the NYT.

#Therme falsely presented itself as an industry player that operated as many as half a dozen spas in Europe.
In fact, it had built & operated just one, outside Bucharest, Romania. As it pitched its vision for #Toronto, Therme’s finances appeared to be shaky. Auditors found it was losing money and had less than 1 million euro (about $1.1 million) in equity.

Toronto Star’s @benspurr.bsky.social : The NY Times has published an investigation into the Therme development at Ontario Place. It found that while the company told the province it had a proven track record of operating six spas around the world, at the time it had only ever operated one.
