Happy to report I have successfully upgraded to RX 6800 just now. There’s a complication though - the card is not fully seated into the slot. I mean it didn’t click because my case is not big enough. I got 3 fan version instead of 2 but it’s all okay.

1. The card has all the PCIe slots fully in.
2. It is screwed tight to the case.
3. The only thing it doesn’t have is the lock portion of the slot is not fully in.

I could with some PC upgrade advice. This is what I currently have. Here's what I think is holding me back:

1) small SSD, I need to get a bigger one for my OS, critical files and games that run much better off SSD like Cyberpunk etc
2) RAM, I've not touched this in a while and I'm sure I can probably get something faster
3) Motherboard, it's not new by any stretch and I have heard good things about the intel 13900.

I don't think I'll need to swap out my 3060 yet but that may be an option one day if I need to.

Has anyone got some thoughts?

Ok let's get some gaming PC upgrade recommendations. Already updating my power supply to a 1000w and CPU to Ryzen 7 5800x3D. Have a 5700xt GPU but want to update. Thinking a 6800XT? Thoughts. #pcgaming #pcupgrade #gpu

These new addressable RGB strips have been sat on my desk for a while. Finally got around to putting them in the PC. (Also, the strips that were in there were starting to fail, frustratingly...they might be repairable, though, and they can go in another rig.)

Decided it was time to get a #PCUpgrade and we're still in an age where the only realistic way to buy a GPU for a reasonable price is in a box that also contains the entire rest of a computer, so for the first time since my first self-built PC in the 90s, I started looking for a systems integrator to build me a new box. My main criterion was an AMD build for CPU and GPU. Nearly every integrator was only offering Nvidia GPUs, so I ended up going with #CyberPower.

What a goddamn comedy of errors. All seemed to be going well at first- I was asked if there was anything special they could do in the build and as I had plans to add more storage asked them to please prestage a SATA power and data cable to a 2.5" drive mounting point. "OK", I was told.

Fast-forward to yesterday, the PC arrives. Yay. Yay?

Not so yay.

As I'm removing it from the shipping box (which was gashed; thanks UPS), I hear a loose screw bouncing around inside the chassis. So I crack it open to remove the shipping foam and hunt down the errant screw, and find the following:

Many loose connectors, including but not limited to the AIO pump
The SATA connectors were not prestaged
I paid a $20 line-item for "professional cable management" which apparently was code for "instead of a loose rats' nest of cables crammed into the drive cage, we will give you a very tightly zip-tied bundle of cables that are not routed though the conduit built into the case but just strapped to the motherboard tray and a rats' nest in the drive cage. This was mooted by the fact that I had to cut out all the ties to be able to reach the loose connectors that needed to be properly seated.

A couple hours later, woo, time to fire it up. No POST, or so I thought. Turns out it was only putting out video signal from the motherboard and not the GPU. Fine. But no BIOS setting I configured would give me a video signal from the GPU.

Okay, I'll deal with that after I get the OS set up. So I let it boot to the M2, and start the Windows OOBE, and... bluescreen.

Reboot. Blue screen.

Hm.

Reboot again, blue screen again. Check the BIOS- nothing super-hot, all temps look nominal; no overclocking is set up. As I'm staring at it, it spontaneously reboots again.

So I spend a couple hours pulling the PSU from my current, working, computer, and swap it into the new one in case it's a power issue, but no joy. Booting Linux from USB also throws a kernel panic within 90 seconds.

So I throw the original PSU back in, and just in case the seeming brick of a GPU is the problem, pull it out. No change.

If this is the state of buying a supposedly ready-to-use gaming PC these days, no wonder consoles and Steam Decks are so popular.

At least they replied to my support email in which I requested they either replace the machine or refund my order. Looks like I get to try another builder, presuming the refund actually comes through in a reasonable time.

Can anyone recommend another integrator I could look as I really would rather not spend the time building it myself this time around due to the "Getting A GPU While Not Being An OEM" tax that is still being levied.

Well… I went a bit overboard and got caught up in the sales today. My new gaming rig is going to be a wonder to behold! Ryzen 9 7950X with 64 GB DDR5-6000 and an RTX 3090 Ti 24 GB GPU
Estimated GPU speed improvement: 700%

Today's arrivals: two 7-port USB PCIe expansion cards. One is going in the main PC (I have a spare PCIe x1 slot accessible on the new motherboard), and one is going back with the 'old' motherboard in the old case to replace the one I pilfered from it when I upgraded the main PC 😛

Here’s the final inside with the new GPU power replacing the ugly adapter that #nvidia supplied. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

For those waiting for the thrilling conclusion of my PC Upgrade saga, here we go. I finally received the final cable, a replacement power cable from the PSU PCIe to the #nvidia 12 pin on the #RTX3070 founders edition. This let me finish cleaning up the rear panel cables (the ones nobody sees). They certainly look better than it started. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

Initial run of #Timespy 1.2 got a respectable 14124. My highest pre-upgrade score was 13121. Adding a thousand points just upgrading the CPU and Memory shows that the upgrade was needed and will easily be worth it. That's it for tonight. #Benchmarking #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

Fortunately the Fan header has just come unplugged when I was installing the GPU riser. Everything is spinning and running quiet. I hadn’t thought about how much quieter new fans would be. Did some basic cable management in the back and got the case sides on. Now I’m going to run some initial benchmarks but it’s late enough that the tweaking and overclocking will have to wait for after work tomorrow. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

CanyonR

And on initial boot we have RAM and GPU recognized. One fan is not spinning, but all of the fans have RGB working. This is why we test. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

CanyonR

With the GPU and RAM reinstalled we’re ready for a test boot. I’m going to wait to make sure all the fans and lights work before I do the cable management in the back. #NotThatCrazy #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

Ostensively one of the biggest upgrades of the system is the move from PCIe gen 3 to gen 4. Unfortunately every part of that bus must support gen 4, including this flat cable on my vertical mount riser. The previous one didn’t, and that caused some issues. This one does! #GoFaster #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

CanyonR

Sometimes you have to make a mess to clean up a mess. Rewiring all the fan and RGB cables is a pain but it’ll be much cleaner when it’s done than it was before. #CableMess #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

CanyonR

One important point when installing the fans on the AIO radiator, you must be careful to not over tighten the mounting screws. You could potentially scree them past the frame of the radiator and into the fins or inner chamber which would be disastrous. #SafeScrewing #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

CanyonR

Step 1 is to remove the GPU, RAM, and all the existing fans in the case. And then I see how much more there is to clean. At this point I’m regretting the decision to leave the components in and upgrade in place. I’m not going to change at this late stage but it would have been better had I got all the parts in before I started. Also, if you’re just joining the upgrade saga, consider going back to the top of this thread to see the story so far…. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware
