This isn't a promotion or anything, but with all the greenwash nonsense out there trying to convince you to buy more unnecessary stuff in the name of sustainability I'm going to take a moment to rave about these resuable silicone tub tops I got which genuinely usefully meet a real need (and yes it's sad that that feels so unusual!)

Perhaps you know about the art collaboration between Herbert Duprat and #caddisflies producing precious #casings?
Inspired by this work, biologist Auke-Florian Hiemstra et al. worked about the cases for detecting #plasticWaste before the term #microplastics existed.

A new study has identified plastic-eating fungi capable of breaking down polyurethane (PU) and polyethylene (PE). Researchers in Germany found that Fusarium, Penicillium, Botryotinia, and Trichoderma strains can metabolize plastic, potentially offering a tool for bioremediation.

Co-author Hans-Peter Grossart stresses that while fungi could help, reducing plastic pollution remains essential. Read more: climatesolutions.news/technolo

A ban on this would be long overdue - for years I’ve thought it’s just mad that chewing gum contains plastic. I think it should be displayed on the packet, because most people will have no idea. Natural alternatives do exist, of course, it’s just the big brands don’t bother.

I saw a piece about this on the news last week. I try and make some products myself, but not everything. If we're going to buy things like dish and laundry soap, moisturizers, etc., we should be just refilling the containers we already have -- instead of adding to the #PlasticWaste problem (at least not right away). And I like using glass and metal containers personally. Jelly jars have so many uses!

Aquatic #ecosystems bear the brunt of #PlasticPollution, with vast “garbage patches,” like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, choking marine #environments. These areas disrupt oceanic currents, sunlight penetration, & habitat structures, endangering coral reefs & other vital ecosystems. On land, improperly managed #PlasticWaste clogs drainage systems, exacerbating flooding & spreading waterborne diseases. (3/5)

#PlasticPollution is a pervasive & escalating crisis that threatens #ecosystems, #biodiversity, & human #health. Each year, millions of tonnes of #PlasticWaste enter the #environment, accumulating in landfills, waterways, & oceans. The #environmental impact is devastating & multifaceted, affecting terrestrial & aquatic #ecosystems alike. (1/5)

#PlasticWaste takes hundreds to thousands of years to decompose. During this time, it fragments into #microplastics — tiny particles that are easily ingested by wildlife. Marine animals, such as sea turtles, seabirds, & fish, often mistake plastic for food, leading to starvation, choking, & internal injuries. This disruption in the food chain affects not only wildlife but also humans, as #microplastics are now detected in seafood, drinking water, & even the air. (2/5)

Actually very surprised and disappointed with this decision from the UK government #plasticwaste #coffeecups Unless they have a better plan and strategy in mind, otherwise it seems like a step in completely the wrong direction 🤔
