@richardwonka Personally, I care mainly about the conditions under which a product is made. I'm thinking here of labor rights, environmental impact, etc. For me the nation of origin is less important, but some nations or regions have better regulations regarding labor and environment.
Also, software wise: FOSS is made by a world wide community.
#Purism produces the Liberty Phone and the Librem key in the USA:
Introducing the – Products by Purism
puri.smIf you want to exercise your digital civil #freedom and #autonomy, and if you want to support the development of a #privacy focused #Linux phone and its operating system, head over the the #Purism shop and order a #Librem5. They are in stock.
Note that the Librem 5 is a phone that is designed from the bottom to run Linux. It is not a phone with Android originals that is now running a Linux distribution.
You fully control the phone.
The work on upgrading the operating system for the #Librem5 Linux phone is progressing well.
The work on this is funded by #Purism and people that have totally optional PureOS subscriptions.
The name of the official Purism #Linux distribution for the Librem5 is #PureOS.
The current version is #Byzantium, the next version will be #Crimson.
Taking an PureOS subscription helps funding.
There is huge progress lately, read the progress report for March 2025 here:

Purism makes premium phones, laptops, mini PCs and…
PurismMany cheaper phones are built for surveillance. They keep spying on you in order to keep earning money on you when you use the phone. The #Purism products, also the #Librem5, do not spy on you, so the moment of the sell is the only point where Purism earns money.
I've been using a Librem 5 for nearly three years as my daily phone now. It is a great pleasure to exercise my #freedom and digital rights, and to be fully in control of the device I bought.
What I hear him say is that, purely from a hardware + manufacturing + margin perspective they could sell the Liberty phone for (much?) less than $2k but a lot of the premium they charge is in the auditing / secure supply chain which gov and other specific markets will pay a high premium for. #purism
Very interesting interview with the founder of #purism about what it takes to sell a “Made in US” phone. It’s incredible how much goes into setting up the supply chain and getting access to the skilled labor. He has a unique perspective because they sell basically the exact same phone one made in China the other in U.S.
One thing that struck me is that the COGS for the US phone is not all that much greater, $550 vs $650. https://www.404media.co/how-a-2-000-made-in-the-usa-liberty-phone-phone-is-manufactured/
what about #furiphone #pinephone or #purism #librem
also wondering if one shouldn't take to the pawnshops with a printout from https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/ - at least being able to flash a non-shit (and optionally degoogled) os would be a decent baseline
@danie10 Please add @purism As far as I know, it's still the ony company in the world that has made #LinuxOnly laptops, minis, servers, tablet, and phones as well as the OS which is #FSF-endorsed.
In all fairness, Dell shouldn't even be on the list as their XPS laptops with Linux preloaded isn't #LinuxFirst or even available except in certain countries.

LINux on MOBileI'm at 3 USB A to C cables that my #purism #librem5 somehow has turned into "slow charging cables". Is anyone else having this issue? I can't prove with certainty that it's the Librem 5 doing it, but it's the common denominator.
For what it's worth, the charging is slow even if I use a different device, adapter, and power source.
Did you know that @purism is working towards a new release for the #Librem5 #FOSS phone?
The name of this new version is #Crimson. Crimson will be the next version of the PureOS #Linux distribution for the Librem 5.
#Purism only earns once money on their sell of a #phone, because Purism is not selling your data.
Since July 2024 you can take an optional subscription to advance the #PureOS development.
Since then there has been a monthly report on the progress.

Purism@ph00lt0 @nicorikken @bert_hubert
The #Librem5 is a full #Linux phone. #Phosh looks very similar to my #GNOME desktop. I can ssh into the Librem 5 without any issues. It is designed to give me full control and #freedom. Like any #FOSS product. I appreciate that daily, and I can accept some inconvenience to have software freedom. That is of course a personal choice. Keep in mind that #Purism only earns money when selling the phone. Not by spying on you and profiling you.
@ph00lt0 @nicorikken @bert_hubert I watched the whole video. The shipping of the Librem5 was indeed delayed often. But, all people I personally know who ordered one, got one in the end, including myself. Yes, after a long wait.
Regarding concern about #Signal: I use indeed Signal desktop on my Librem 5. Unfortunately Signal does not support #Linux as primary device, but you cannot blame #Purism for that.
Can anybody who has used both PostmarketOS and PureOS on their Librem 5 state what, if any, advantages I would see moving from PureOS to PMOS ? I am familiar with both and have no serious dislikes of either. Just not sure it will be worth my weekend to do it.
From the #Purism community forum:
"L5/Liberty spec upgrades and standalone mainboards are coming, but I cannot provide a date at this time.":
Yes, L5/Liberty spec upgrades and standalone mainboards…
Purism communityDid you ever browse through the extensive #documentation of #Purism?
@purism is a #socialpurpose #corporation that makes #freedom and #privacy respecting #hardware and #software, like #Linux #phones, #laptops, #tablets and (mini) #servers. But also the #PureOS #OperatingSystem and USB #SecurityTokens.
Basically the whole range of computing needs. Both for private and business purposes.

What do you think about this product line?
@itsfoss If you can afford to, just buy a computer from a Linux-only vendor like #Purism, #Tuxedo, #Slimbook, #StarLabs, #System76, etc. You will get professional support, and contribute towards making desktop Linux really succeed.
If you can't afford it, ask your local retailers to sell computers with #Linux, otherwise you'll take your money elsewhere.
