#OrilliaOntario - Need something fixed? #Orillia #RepairCafé returning in April
Event taking place April 5 at St. James' Anglican Church
Mar 14, 2025
"Local residents are invited to bring their broken or torn possessions to St. James’ Church on Saturday, April 5 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), where 'fixers' will be on hand to make repairs and turn their 'trash' into 'treasure' at the eighth Orillia Repair Café, which takes place twice a year.
"The event is supported by local volunteers and Sustainable Orillia, St. James’ Anglican Church and Lake Country Time Trade.
"Light refreshments will be provided as well as child-friendly activities. A new feature this year will be '#BookSwaps,' one for adults and one for children. The café has a friendly and fun ambience and combines an enjoyable family activity with a rewarding outcome.
"Annalise Stenekes has led the project since its inception and has gathered a dedicated and talented team of fixers who will attempt to repair a variety of items, including bicycles, lamps, home appliances, sewing machines, jewelry and audio/visual and computer equipment. Small furniture items will be repaired, clothing and footwear mended and toys given new life.
"Last year, 230 kilograms of items were given a new lease on life, diverting potential waste from the #landfill and saving an estimated $1,000.
"'#Repairing and #reusing broken items, as opposed to disposing of them and purchasing new ones, is a practical and meaningful contribution we can make for our environment,' says local resident Wendy Kirk. 'The Repair Café is also a feel-good place — at times the joy is tangible when someone’s prized item is restored to its former usefulness.'
"Repair Café events are happening around the world, saving money, reducing landfill waste, cutting CO2 emissions, promoting learning and fostering community connections."

OrilliaMatters.comRepairing Our Clothes
Thanks to the latest WRAP report (Feb 2025) we finally have some statistics about how choosing to #repair our #clothes and buying #SecondHand is having an impact.
A few key points >>>
#Repairing our clothes has been shown to displace the need for buying new items by 82%.
This shows that we’re placing value on the pieces already in our wardrobes, showing the #BigCompanies that we don’t want to keep replacing items,

www.youtube.comWhelp, feeling rather chuffed. Just disassembled our ailing 7yo front loader washing machine with my son, and we replaced the broken drain pump/impeller unit (luckily, we were able, after a lot of time researching, to figure out which part was right for that model. Put it back together and (amazingly) didn't have *any* screws left over. It passed various tests (like the ability to drain water, which was failing before), and it passed! Huzzah! #Repairing FTW!
Thinking of moving my #sewing machine and #ironing board out to the garage and setting up a workspace there, since I don't use them every day but do want to make #repairing and #alterations a weekly or fortnightly habit.
However, the garage gets pretty hot in summer. Last summer the outdoors alone got as hot as 30°C IIRC. Would that be damaging to my equipment to live out there at that temp or higher?

We slip into the costumes + roles of these #travelling traders. I play the ancestress of an #RepairCafe #repairing clothes. And as used to be the case, I need goods to get me through the winter. So I make #luckyCharms from scraps of #fabric. Will they still be popular in the 21st century?

I had an old Mini USB cable lying around that I made a long time ago ( https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/8ayr2l/my_15_cheap_diy_mechanical_keyboard_cable/ ). I cut the USB-A part, soldered it, hot-glued it to secure it, and it turned out pretty good .
Actually, the first time I closed it, it didn't work. Then it hit me—the hot glue I used to secure the cable at the root melted the solder inside the button.
Do you remember my #VisibleMending project with a second hand #blazer? The collar with a brown suede imitation was completely worn out. For contrast, I choose a chicken print from the Provence, and for harmony, more patches. It's nearly ready. Problem: the remaining collar tips are unequal. I decided to applicate different motives on them to conceal it. @visiblemending @sewing

#Apple's #AntiRepairDesign turns their #envoirmentalism into #VirtueSignalling without being actually envoirmentally friendly...
At least all the others haven't implemented #AntiPrepair-#DRM AND refuse to sell original #parts that just work!
Apple literally prevents people from #repairing and thus #reusing their devices or even #upcylcing and #refurbishing devices for no good reason!
Compared to @frameworkcomputer and @Fairphone #Apple is just inexcuseably bad!
I thought my Bernina sewing machine had come to the end of its long (several decades) and hard-working life when I started it up and there was a "pop" followed by smoke coming out. But not to be deterred, @rogerparkinson set to with tools and determination. He got a replacement part for the princely sum of $5.70, put it all back together, and it's purring away as good as new. My hero. #sewing #repairing

Okay, let's do this:
If you love #sewing but find it challenging to fit it into your busy life, join me in my attempt to sew a minimum of 30 minutes a day:
Let's encourage each other and celebrate progress.

Anyone up to some sort of "30 minutes a day" sew-along?
Could be anything #sewing related:

I can't carve out large chunks of time for sewing but hope to sneak in 30 min/day.
