#NewPipe #SailfishOS dev diary day 53. Running Debian Buster on Ubuntu Noble Numbat to build Sailfish OS libraries written in Java.

The fact this is even possible -- and with so little effort -- is just brilliant. But I have a nagging feeling it's hiding a much deeper problem (mumble mumble.. versioning... mumble mumble... NixOS).

Jolla C2 just got a deep dive review from LinuxEasy. They looked past the specs and into what really matters: why this is a true community phone, and how that shows up in daily use.

#EGU25 is pretty hard to navigate if you have a privacy-respecting phone OS (#SailfishOS in my case).

- the website is kinda terrible, has no good chronological view (marked sessions dosrupt the flow) or Gantt-style overview, is super slow, often rate-limits you and logs you out after a couple minutes. 😩 🐌
- the app hard-requires Google play services (for what!?), and just quits 🤦

So I guess one can just keep walking through the poster halls...

@Jkp
???
It is an Xperia I am using. VoLTE works fine.... with EE and #SailfishOS

Three sent me loads of messages informing me 3G was being deprecated. I ignored the messages as I knew my 'phone supported 4G. :ablobgrimace:

I've died, and gone to Heaven.

I've just discovered repos providing Sailcron (job scheduler) and Midnight Commander (file manager) FOR MY 'PHONE. 🎉

Who would have thought such things would make my day? 😃

That depends on the person. If the person wanted to escape the clutches of Google or Apple, then yes. If the person wanted a 'phone they can make their own, another yes. If the person was willing to put a little work into getting things "just right", yes again.

If the person just wants a 'phone that works straight out of the box, then probably no.

Everyone on the Fediverse should be on #SailfishOS or LineageOS or GrapheneOS, et al.

It has taken a wee while to get used to Sailfish, and the different way the ecosystem works.

For example:
Sailfish has a compatibility mode for using Android apps, called Android AppSupport. AppSupport works very well (in my experience, so far). It works by creating an virtual environment in the home directory called "android_storage". The Android apps then expect, e.g., images, to reside in this environment, not in the usual home directory one level up.

#NewPipe #SailfishOS dev diary day 46. Optional extras: enabling and disabling file download and file opening.

Disabling these is just what we need when running the code on a remote server.

My #SailfishOS device is up to date, running version 5.0.0.57. I'm happy to see a bunch of bug fixes rolled out; thank you @jolla team for another smooth and straightforward update.

Sadly I forgot to capture a shot of the update screen summarising the changes beforehand, so here are the release notes for the curious:
