Shrimp Thief

Mudflat Wanderer

The textures of the low tide mudflats make this photograph of a foraging sanderling (Calidris alba) captivating, especially with its reflection in the shallow water between the rises. Look closely, and you'll notice a tiny, barely visible morsel in the bird's beak.

I had a blast with shorebirds this fall! The variations of light, perspective and background I was able to get were incredible. This Sanderling is posing in front of a group of Dunlin roosting in the distance as the sun rose and cast its beautiful golden light.

Looking Good

This sanderling (Calidris alba) appears to study its reflection in the water. I'm sure is just foraging for food.
