Confusing combined prepositions: Off of, out of, centered around.

Why not from, from, and centered on?

Teachers, we're curious: do you ever get your students to do introductory language study on Duolingo or similar apps as extension activities when they are learning about other regions? What grades or ages, what apps, what languages?

But this is a good example of how meaning is a moving target. A consensus, not an objective fact.

This becomes very obvious when learning a second language. Especially when moving beyond vocab for everyday objects into more abstract concepts.

IMHO second language learning is as essential as maths or reading to a well rounded education - received or autodidactic. It's a weakness in the anglophone world that it's not always part of our curriculum.

Conversation about Second Languages

I took spansih in almost every year it was available to me K-12. I've always viewed language as important. People would ask me "Taylor, why are you studying spanish? It's pointless, study math instead or literally anything. You are a genius and live in the US. English is all you'll ever need"

Well today I was working on a very time sensitive project and had to drain a lot of boiling water very quickly. I had a lot to do and we have these very large yellow lids. I had only a few seconds and the only person standing nearby was a Romanian that speaks no English and no German. She speaks Romanian and Portuguese. Close enough, I hoped. I looked her in the eyes and said "Amarillo", she reached down and gave me exactly what I needed.

It is intensely important to speak more than one language. A great deal of the Latin in Spanish can be found everywhere from Portuguese to Croatian. I would honestly argue that even in the US, having a second language is one of the most important skills you can have.

This can be so very true. I took French in early 1980s as total immersion. We spoke French only, all day, and at night, I would call my wife at home and could not speak English suddenly, many words were not there. My mind had moved to thinking in French.

I can be so awkward on the phone trying to explain what I’m phoning for. Well, you’re a removal company so I guess I’m moving? Yup. Can you move me, please? 🤣
No problems expressing my thoughts when I’m furious though, and my English gets so much better as well! #digitalchild #introvert #secondlanguage #communication

Neuroscience:

How our brains cope with speaking more than one language.

Speaking a second or even a third language can bring obvious advantages, but occasionally the words, grammar and even accents can get mixed up. This can reveal surprising things about how our brains work.

#Emotion words were used less by #Spanish bilinguals that read and wrote about whether to sacrifice someone to save lives (on footbridge #trolleyProblem) in their #secondLanguage (#English).

Using their 2nd #language also led to more #utilitarian #moral decisions and arguments—an effect mediated by using (fewer) high-arousal words.

Support for #dualProcessTheory claims that #emotion can promote #deontological #ethical thinking?
